TikTok: Look! I discovered hot water melts frozen food faster!
Twitter: Look at this TikTok video showing how to defrost your food faster!
Yahoo news: Millions of Twitter users view TikTok video showing new life hack for melting frozen food!
Mastodon: Please read my academic white paper describing the impacts of public school system underfunding
Well, this is…unexpected. Please support education and educators. Especially now.
@Michigander this hits way too close to home
@Michigander @tramtrist true story, smart people are on Mastodon, some even host their own instance.
@420 @Michigander Ya I like to have a local timeline with others so I don't roll my own
@tramtrist
As I understand, Akkoma lets you have the best of both worlds with its "bubble" feature.
Babka: Can you imagine what that TikTok video would have looked like if we lived in a Jewish society? Is defrosting cooking? What would the proper prayer be over melting frozen food?
Here's a photo of my cat.
@Michigander Mastodon FTW!
This toot makes me dance. Hooorah! Hip Hip Hoorah!
All the online papers today have five of six "stories" based on collecting Elon the Propagandist's twitter tweets to add 400 words to.
Advertising the Jan6th-ist's ugly racist platform.
@Michigander I mean, I boosted this, but right below it I also boosted “The music from a porn is the poundtrack.” So I probably shouldn’t be the one throwing stones.
@loganfive @Michigander and you are doing a valuable public service by providing a levity that people need. Because social media isn't work, even when it is work-related.
@Michigander And I fucking LOVE that
@Michigander OR.... this could be the Mastodon part:
"Please read my academic white paper describing the dangers of defrosting frozen food using high temperature water with regards to bacterial growth."
(am I right? )
@jann @Michigander Too right you're right. In fact it's quicker to defrost frozen goods in a bowl of cold water rather than hot.
@apodoxus @gr8nanjan @Michigander Just like for SOME reason, people thought it was faster to freeze hot water than normal temp tap water. Old wives tale... They thought it was quicker to go from one extreme to another.
@jann @gr8nanjan @Michigander But I'm pretty sure water *can* freeze faster than hot water. It's called the Mpemba effect but I don't think cold water will defrost something faster than hot water...
@jann @gr8nanjan @Michigander What about UCR and Yale and Nature or the multiple articles in AJP cited by Wikipedia? Or is MIT the final word on this for you?
1. https://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/hot_water.html
2. https://www.yalescientific.org/2015/01/unsolved-mysteries-the-mpemba-effect/
@apodoxus @gr8nanjan @Michigander I dismissed the Mpemba effect as a generality for lack of empirical proof. "for a wide range of experimental conditions.", "can sometimes freeze faster", or "Results from different experiments vary, and no single theory has been substantial. " is what those articles say.
There is some other thing at work in CERTAIN circumstances and that has yet to be shown empirically - as all the articles you pointed out said.
@jann @gr8nanjan @Michigander Both myself and Wikipedia said hot water *can* freeze faster than cold water and neither said it always does. I even highlighted the word can the first time... They don't show that something has not been shown, only that the explanation has not been pinned down yet. They show that it's controversial, exactly like Wikipedia, which you attempted to discredit said.
@apodoxus @gr8nanjan @jann @Michigander
[paraphrase of Wikipedia] Under certain very specific circumstances that have not been reliably duplicated, it is claimed (but disputed) that it may be possible for hot water to freeze - or well, to begin to freeze, or reach some point in the change of state that isn’t well defined - before cooler water does. Maybe.
[the take away] DID YOU KNOW HOT WATER FREEZES FASTER THAN COLD WATER!!
@jann @apodoxus @Michigander @gr8nanjan
This is the kind of exchange that causes rational thought to want to impale itself on a spike and bury itself.
@jann @apodoxus @gr8nanjan @Michigander I thought people froze hot water to make the ice cubes clear rather than cloudy. It never occurred to me that folks would think it was faster somehow.
@CorvidCrone @apodoxus @gr8nanjan @Michigander I don't even know how it would serve to make them clear rather than cloudy. Now I'm gonna look THAT up!
@jann @CorvidCrone @apodoxus @gr8nanjan @Michigander okay now *this* was a classic mastodon exchange.
@jann @apodoxus @gr8nanjan @Michigander “Cold water is faster” is compared to cold air (i.e. fridge), which I think is where the confusion lies. Hot water would be faster but you don’t want to promote bacteria, so
@pvanb @jann @apodoxus @Michigander I'm not in the least confused and neither am I stupid enough to use hot water to defrost anything. I guess decades of using cool/cold water to defrost something must have some kind of usefulness or the method wouldn't still be used. In the vernacular of a teenager. Whatever!
@jann @Michigander came here to say this.
@jann @Michigander I was trying to figure out if the failure of education was about the heat transfer or the bacterial growth, and I’m still not sure.
@jann @Michigander former kitchen worker, and this was the first thing i thought. also if it is hot enough it will essentially be cooking it.
@Michigander Funny thing is if ur on #Mastodon awhile you already know this is #Feature not #Bug . I'll have mine medium rare thank you
@KilleansRow @Michigander I don't think bugs come in medium rare; they're either raw or cooked.
@Michigander Who do you follow on Twitter?
@DavidSamuelAuer I deleted my account in November
@Michigander I just am on Twitter for the hashtag games. The people I follow are too intelligent to post weird stuff like that.
I want them all too move to Mastodon because Musk is running that platform into the ground. Somebody needs to start up hashtag games here.
@Michigander @chrisjrn I chuckled when I thought that the punchline was that the last one was just quirky and unrelated and I sobbed when I realized a few seconds later that it was a reaction to the same event
@glyph you're welcome?
@Michigander Yup. Thanks for sharing
@Michigander Yahoo news of the next few days "inexplicable rise in food poisonings".
@Michigander
Is Yahoo news still a thing?
@Michigander You know what they say: Toad style is immensely strong... When it's properly used, it's almost invincible.
@Michigander Alas, using the microwave set for defrost is better, even if a bit slower. However, I agree that US education system is failing. Underfunding isn't the only problem. Political interference is killing basic science along with honest history and health ed. Reading and writing had already collapsed. Privately funded education, (including "vouchers") is even worse.
@Michigander You forgot the TikTok video testing whether the life hack works. Preferably with some cat-content added.
@Michigander I, for one, welcome our new home-schooled overlords!
@Michigander

@Michigander
also Mastodon: mrrrow I am kitty
@Michigander Facebook three months later: just the tiktok video ripped and stripped of its watermark
@Michigander@toad.social the political analysis is also on tiktok tho fam the activist networks on that app are pretty big tbh some people even have degrees that they mention in every single video they make
Reddit: I got food poisoning after following this tiktok video
Facebook: big government is trying to keep our food frozen
Pleaasse replace ‘Mastodon’ with ‘Fediverse’. We’re all #Fedizens here (citizens of the Fediverse), not Mastozens (citizens of a Fediverse product)
@Michigander Morning TV (weeks later): This video is currently taking over "the internet"
@Michigander in Bulgaria we don't say "yeah, that's fucking obvious, duh", we say "that guy just invented hot water" and I think it's beautiful
(yeah, it's an actual idiom)
@lanzz I like your Bulgarian idiom and will have to start using it!
