Having heard John Mearsheimer give a robust argument for why the Russia-Ukraine war is the West's fault, I am struck by how the underlying logic is that of an unbalanced ex-boyfriend blaming a new suitor for his violence towards an ex.

I get that JM is a "realist" who considers it inevitable that Russia's neighbors will be her subordinates, but he's just plain wrong to use that "reality" as apologia for war. Clearly Putin lacks his faith in Mother Russia.
