Anyone using Twitter to get info on #HurricaneHilary is bound to be misinformed right now. The hashtag is littered with fake videos and reports. There are also a ton of conspiracy theory and climate change denier posts. And of course these are all accompanied with the usual screaming and fighting you see on Twitter now. Toxic. Useless. Misleading.

Mastodon is far better than Twitter for knowing what is truly happening on the ground and why.

@mike This will be true when we get more general-purpose providers, like news organizations, weather services, and journalists on here.

But a quick search of #HurricaneHilary on Mastodon<dot>online reveals a lot of discussion about its impending arrival and very little actual news.

Filtering out trolls and false rumors is important, yes.

The ability to sort by # of follower, likes, and boosts instead of by chronology is actually vital for events where ppl interested >> people w/ info.

I saw that there's a beta to be released Monday. Mastodon looks to be getting search abilities for plain text. Hashtags are not always the best way to discover stuff here.

@MyWoolyMastadon @Carwil @mike I hope that comes to . is the only way to help make a useful tool to find valuable information rather than randomly seeing what people post. . Mastodon now is like a library with good books randomly placed on assorted shelves.
