"CNN’s new management came along at a time of establishment confusion over whether the old political center would return after Trump. America’s business establishment — including Warner Bros. Discovery billionaire John Malone — hoped it would. But that proved a pipe dream. The division between authoritarianism and democracy is now too deep. If anyone had any doubts, CNN’s Trump town hall should have erased them."

Robert ReichGoodbye, CNN’s Chris Licht. But what’s the lesson? By Robert Reich
William Lindsey :toad:

"What especially confused Chris Licht and the rest of CNN’s management was the difference between being politically partisan and standing up against authoritarian demagogues. They assumed that holding Trump accountable for what he did (and continues to do) was inconsistent with so-called “balanced journalism.”

Wrong. It is not partisan to stand up for decency and democracy. That’s where CNN’s audience wanted — and presumably still wants — CNN to be."

@wdlindsy When not a single one of the executives at a news network have any journalism experience or education, this is what happens. It’s just another scripted reality TV show chasing ratings.

@wdlindsy that makes it sound like those guys were simply naive. In my opinion it was fully planned. Both-siderism suppresses votes, brings apathy, the only way the right can gain power

@azphilosopher From what Robert Reich has written about the Licht story, it seems clear to me he's very aware that Licht, Zaslav, and Malone are not in the least naive. As he said several days ago, follow the money from Malone, who's essentially a right-wing Republican, through Zaslav, to Licht. This isn't about providing "both" perspectives. It's about privileging the Republican perspective, even when it's the MAGA Trump perspective.
