Read Thomas Zimmer on David Brooks' "moralizing nostalgia" and its powerful appeal to centrists along with Oliver Haynes on how center-right parties in Europe are trying to absorb the lethal rhetoric of the extreme right.
Zimmer:
"Weaponized nostalgia is an extremely potent tool in the hands of reactionaries, an important vehicle to transport rightwing ideas into the mainstream and make the reactionary project more palatable."

Haynes on the claim of the right that the woes of society today are due to "decivilisation" (this is Brooks' thesis, too):
"Conservatives are generally uncomfortable attributing structural causes to problems, especially when so many crises are tied to the economic model they have spent decades championing. This is where the great replacement comes in."
Nostalgia posits a mythic age when all was right — and white and male-controlled.
