As Reuters reports, Supreme Court Justice Alito has refused to recuse himself from "a tax case that involves an attorney who interviewed him for a newspaper article and helped him "air his personal grievances."

A reminder: Alito is Catholic. So is Thomas. So is Roberts, who refuses to hold either justice accountable for unethical behavior.

The US Catholic bishops have rattled their sabers at Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden.

The GuardianSamuel Alito refuses to recuse himself from tax case before supreme courtBy Guardian staff reporter

But they are totally silent about the growing perception of the public that the Supreme Court, dominated by a right-wing Catholic bloc, is morally compromised and even corrupt — just as they are silent about the cruel anti-immigrant stunts of Catholic governors DeSantis and Abbott.

The disparity is noteworthy, isn't it?

@wdlindsy
I was hoping that the Pope would send some of these US bishops overseas, as I certain that God would like for them to broaden their perspectives.

@wdlindsy Lol, getting those people into power was their long term project which wildly succeeded. What's the point of feigning incomprehension? It's been about power since 0 AD.

@aburka Feigning incomprehension is a longstanding rhetorical device to demonstrate just how comprehensible what's feigned actually is.

Biden and Pelosi don't seem to use their offices to advance Catholic causes, so, of course the more militant bishops rage at them.

Every (fundamentalist) American Christian denomination is willing to forgive a
lot if a given politician sometimes advances their cause and are equally as quick to chastise if a given politician never helps them.

@ferricoxide I'd say that both Biden and Pelosi have been very clear about how their Catholic faith animates their political life — as a value system rather than an attempt to impose a Catholic "cause" on others. In that regard, I think they're a lot closer to the vision of Pope Francis than of many US Catholic bishops.

@wdlindsy
The forefathers of the USA warned about the evils of theocracy

@NMBA They did, indeed. It's why they were resolute in calling for a wall to separate church and state.

@wdlindsy Because the rules for appointing justices haven't been followed for nearly a decade, the United States no longer has a Supreme Court, it has a bunch of people dressed up as justices and pretending to be a Supreme Court while everyone else plays along.

@StarkRG Yes, that seems right to me. And we can track the decline in the court by paying attention to the fact that Republican presidents, elected with a minority of popular votes, have stacked the court while Democratic ones elected with a popular majority have been denied their right to appoint justices. And at the center of it all is the nefarious influence of the Federalist Society and Leonard Leo. They are singularly responsible for the current corruption.

@wdlindsy
When are US Catholics going to figure out that no matter how much they advance right-wing causes, they're still on the "them they came for" list?

@Nazani Yes, US Catholics haven't learned a lot from history, it seems, doesn't it? Only a generation and two ago, they were in the sights of the very white evangelicals with whom they are now joined at the hip in their culture wars. The US Catholic bishops have been very cunning in forming their alliance with their former evangelical enemies. No wonder Pope Francis keeps issuing warnings that US Catholics seem more infatuated with right-wing politics than with Catholic values.

@wdlindsy Indulgences are back on sale.

@72mz Perhaps by the US bishops. Not by the pope they scorn, I'd imagine.
