What an ignominious end for a celebrated writer to bring herself to: J.K. Rowling now finds herself linked to Elon Musk — of all people! — as Imane Khelif sues Rowling and Musk for their “misogynistic, racist and sexist” cyberbullying of her.

It didn't have to come to this. Before her descent into astonishing anti-trans ranting, Rowling was much admired as a creative, successful writer.

The Guardian · JK Rowling and Elon Musk named in Imane Khelif cyberbullying lawsuitBy Nadia Khomami

Until she chose to open her mouth and spew forth vile anti-trans rhetoric, no one had a clue of the dreck that lives inside her, when it comes to issues of gender and sexual orientation.

No one knew that this seemingly brilliant, creative writer is joined at the hip to Elon Musk — of all people — when it comes to her thinking about these matters.

How the mighty have fallen. And the tragedy is, Rowling has engineered her own fall.

"This is not just about a single case of bullying, it’s about a bunch of rich people threatening her career, reputation, and life by working up their millions of fans into a frenzy—over a lie. The unmitigated arrogance of these people to think they can say anything at all without repercussions is exactly why they should be punished."

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar · Trump and Vance Serve Up a Feast of Political Lies & Olympic Boxer Sues Musk and JK Rowling for Cyber HarassmentBy Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

"In response to the lawsuit, J.K. Rowling said she would 'happily' do prison time over her transgender views. Sounds good to me! Of course, her ‘views’ are not why she is being sued. Her 'actions' are!"

@wdlindsy Her antisemitism was always on display in the books though :-/

@wdlindsy

Musk has engineered his own fall, too. But supposedly sane, normal "liberal" people still participate in "X," and people still read/buy J.K. Rowling's books. Too many of us prop up them both.

@KathyLK Yes, I agree. I'd say Musk didn't have far to fall, though, whereas for Rowling the fall has been a steep one. She could have continued occupying a very respectable perch if she'd thought her thoughts but kept them to herself. The fact that she seems to feel compelled to vent such ugly counterfactual prejudice repeatedly is mystifying. Where does this come from, I wonder?

@wdlindsy

Good question. Maybe one of her own kids is trans? Musk disowned his own trans kid.

@KathyLK Yes, Musk has skin in the game with a trans child, which makes his attitudes all the more hateful and horrifying. I don't know what Rowling's personal investment in these issues might be, if any.

@wdlindsy On a side note:
If it needs support in form of money (lawsuits especially against wealthy people likely cost a LOT of money) i'd love to see a link here, if one wants/is able to support this case.
✊

@grootinside When you say "it," I'm assuming you mean the lawsuit? If I spot links to contribute, I'll share them here. Thanks for suggesting that.

@wdlindsy The last sentence of that quote. Right there is the absolute core of it, at least IMO.

@wdlindsy Who thinks she is a "brilliant, creative writer"? I know of two world famous writers who passed opinion on her work, Ursula K. Le Guin and Alan Moore, and both seem to have found it derivative and pedestrian.

@black_flag Seemingly is an important qualifier in that statement, is it not?

@wdlindsy I mean, yes she seemed like an OK person 20 years ago.

Not so much since then, though.

@androcat Yes, that's my assessment, based largely on the fact that I was really taken by the Harry Potter books when they first came out and read them multiple times. Now, I wouldn't give them the time of day. I put my set of them and all other Rowling books I owned out in my little free library and gave them away.

@wdlindsy I was never much of a Harry Potter fan but I admired Rowling personally. Now, no.

@mitchw The way her biography was presented to us when she first came on the scene — economically struggling single mother who swotted away at her manuscript in coffee shops — made her sound appealing. Who she is now showing herself to be really is alienating a lot of people who admired her and enjoyed her works, and I wonder why she has chosen to do that.

@wdlindsy As to why she has chosen that: When you're a billionaire it's easy to surround yourself with people who will never tell you that you're full of crap, even when you're destroying yourself.

@mitchw Well-stated and well-noted. I agree.

@wdlindsy meh. Potter was always Enid Blyton with wands.

@Geoff Thanks for sharing your assessment of her.
