For some of us now, for many of us, the question is,

How will we survive?

Or,

Will we survive?

“The marginalized and the disenfranchised are always hurt first and most with the kind of upheaval that we expect to come, but it is worse this time because hurting them has been advertised as the point.”

Morning Memo · Not The Fight We Wanted Or Signed Up For But It’s The One We GotBy David Kurtz
William Lindsey :toad:

“The Madison Square Garden rally, the increasingly unhinged speeches, the shocking vulgarity on full display—it was all there for everyone to see.

And, more than 50% of Americans saw it and said that’s exactly what they wanted.

I don’t have numbers yet, but I anticipate the white evangelical vote will be over 80%, white Catholic and mainline over 60%.”

The Bulwark · Grappling With the CatastropheBy Mona Charen

If I have to read one more commentator, typically white males like me but unlike me not gay, blathering about how we're better than this, this is just not us, this is not who or what America is, I think I'll lose it.

This absolutely IS exactly who we are. This election has shown us this in spades.

It's time to face the truth about who very many of us are and what very many of us want while mouthing empty Christian platitudes as we open the door to cruelty.

@wdlindsy They are ignorant of it now, but they — like us — will rue the day.

@wdlindsy Yes indeed...it won't be long before everyone is going to be forced to look into the mirror and face reality and they won't like it one bit.

@wdlindsy

The reason I wanted Kamala as the candidate was because I wanted America to have a long hard look in the mirror and decide to change who we are.

But we didn't.

@jmjm No, we didn't. We didn't intend to do so. It's so much easier to pat ourselves on the back and reassure ourselves that we're the good, holy, and righteous while we continue refusing to face the deep legacy of racism and misogyny in this nation. Hard times are coming as a result, and they'll come to the very people who have chosen to take us down this path.

@wdlindsy Too many Americans are cowards, afraid of change or anything new. Afraid they will have to share with someone else; someone who doesn't look like them.

Thing is, the only reason the US was a leader in the 1950s was most of Europe had no factories left. We can't go backward; that set of conditions no longer exists.

I shall now return to reading Marcus Aurelius...

@wdlindsy I spent a whole career teaching rhetoric and critical thinking. You know, Aristotle, Plato, Cicero, Quintilian, writing essays with thesis statements, arguments, evidence, etc. I thought I was doing my part to preserve democracy, the enlightenment, and civil society. It turns out that none of this matters in this political environment. Insulting opponents and repeating lies over and over again until they are accepted as true is the winning strategy.

I think there are a number of overlapping causes. Social media is one. Another is that income inequality is making housing unaffordable. Tech bros rule the world. A third is that climate change is causing mass migration and the people want to address this by stopping migration instead of addressing the root cause.

Ultimately, the upper 1% thinks that they no longer need any of us. Robots and AI will do all the necessary work. We are just collateral damage.

@wdlindsy It has much to do with conspiracy beliefs and cult supporters. They may want this, but it's not what they need. They're too stupid to know the difference. 🤡

@wdlindsy

No one ever asks...

"How could Germany elect someone like #Hitler?"

...anymore.

@wdlindsy

"Stupidity is the same as Evil if you judge by the results."
- Margret Atwood, author of "A Handmaid's Tale."

@MugsysRapSheet @wdlindsy Germany did not elect Hitler. After an election in which Nazis got 37% of the vote, he was made chancellor in a deal with traditional conservatives who mistakenly thought they could control him. Even after the Reichstag fire, in Germany's last multiparty election till after WWII, they got less than 45%, despite violence and intimidation by Nazi thugs.

@willoughby_12 @MugsysRapSheet @wdlindsy Since we seem to have given our Hitler wannabe a majority... yean. Kinda depressing, huh?

@auscandoc

Actually, they didn’t. Hitler’s party was part of a coalition government. They took it over, violently. They weren’t elected to rule until after they controlled government, and even then they had to prevent the communists from being able to vote.

They never “won”.

@wdlindsy "And none of it mattered"

It's crushing, heartbreaking - but I guess the bitter truth is, that is who America is, at least the majority voting vor one of the ugliest human beings on earth.
America is NOT "better than this". And maybe it has never been - but it has never been visible as clear as today.

I feel for every person who will be hurt💔

@wdlindsy
It looks like Trump won the election with about 30% of the votes from eligible American voters which is less than half.

@wdlindsy
I don't think they did see it. I don't think low information voters consume much political information at all. They vote for their party. That's it.

We imagine thoughts are in their heads that aren't generally there, then are baffled that knowing that (we imagine) they can possibly vote the way they do.

@wdlindsy So-called Christians are ruing this world. They are the reason why there are wars!

@wdlindsy I have stated before that All LIES AND DECEIT were to GET VOTES WHICH IS TAKEN AS PERMISSION TO DO WHATEVER THE FELON TRUMP WANTS DONE ...

SO LOOKS LIKE NO ONE WAS LISTENING ... MAY someone save your SOULS...

HAVE TO ASK ... WHERE were the law keepers years ago and not dealing with all the illegality done by Trump and other mobsters ??? This is NOT NEW just progressive ... WHO'S pockets were filled and kept steady NOT MAKING WAVES ...WHO was not paying attention ???
