For some of us Americans this year, Thanksgiving has been a time for sober reflection about who we really are, when we slough off the self-congratulatory myths about the shining city on a hill uniquely blessed by God, exceptional in all the world.
Here's Danielle Moodie's analysis of what we see when we look in the mirror:
"What he has done is given people permission to be their worst, most disgusting, most vile self."
"But I have to say this, that when folks say this is not who we are -- no, this is who America is, and I need for people to stop thiinking that America is better. Donald Trump is very representative of the other half of America. We just wanted to believe, and I still to some consideration believe, that there are more decent people than there are vile human beings."
"But Donald Trump is very much representative of an American populace that loathes decency, that loathes morals, that has no values, and that is craven and vicious and cruel. And they celebrate those things."
"Emboldened by Donald Trump’s blatantly anti-trans, Islamophobic and racist campaign to successfully secure a second term in the White House and a Republican trifecta, GOPers have been using their time ahead of the 119th Congress to launch new and unprecedented attacks against their will-be colleagues on the other side of the aisle."
~ Ermine Yücel
"The day before Thanksgiving, Elon Musk tweeted that Alexander Vindman should 'pay the appropriate penalty' for committing treason. Musk claimed, falsely, that Vindman, an immigrant from the then-Soviet Union, 'is on the payroll of Ukrainian oligarchs.' ...
If we don’t want to become a banana republic, we cannot let this be normalized."

"Regardless of whether Musk intended to threaten Alexander Vindman with execution, that is at least one reasonable inference—and perhaps the strongest. Musk’s post has been viewed more than 6 million times and re-posted nearly 14,000 times (as of Friday evening, November 29, 2024). …
A line has been crossed."

"Our biggest task is to plug compassion, tolerance, peace, human rights, equal opportunity and democracy into a technological, political and media reality that often promote the opposite."

"Well kids, we live in a world built for billionaires and narcissists, and we pretty much have our whole life. I know this isn't news to people of awareness such as yourselves, but the proof is in the pudding now, and the pudding is on fire."

Too Late.
yep their killing you.
fight back
@wdlindsy Good article. I think I would steer people toward Mastodon instead of Bluesky, as there's nothing stopping Musk or someone else with enough money from taking that platform over as well.
@garidin Yes, I myself have not been inclined to go to Bluesky. I've been happy here at Mastodon.
@wdlindsy
The free world has a new powerful USSA enemy it needs to rapidly adapt to or suffer even greater harm.
@wdlindsy The danger isn't so much the falseness of the claim as the incitement it represents. There are thousands of MAGA thugs willing to act on this, a much more lethal threat at this point than what is left of the US justice system. Perhaps time for Americans to quietly get acquainted with local anarchist/antifa/BLM folk, who have had a realistic understanding of the violent nature of American power for a long time, and have good advice, literature, and training to offer.
@martinvermeer I couldn't agree more.
