A thread that's a snapshot of America as it makes itself great again in anticipation of Trump's inauguration:
"Since Trump won re-election — this time with the popular vote — many of the most influential people in America seem to have lost any will to stand up to him as he goes about transforming America into the sort of authoritarian oligarchy he admires. Call it the Great Capitulation."
~ Michelle Goldberg

"We are beginning to see this all over the American political-economic system — giant corporations and hugely wealthy people going out of their way to appease King Trump even in advance of his coronation. They are paying him off to maintain or enlarge their profits."
~ Robert Reich
Funny, isn't it, how the "working class" and its "economic anxiety" suddenly exits the state, no?

"Our country faces an incoming tsunami of bigotry, hatred, and discrimination. It targets Muslims, Arabs, Jews, Black people, the LGBTQ+ community, and many others. And it always pretends to be something other than what it is. These forces are fueled not only by their proponents, but equally by the collaboration and silence of the spineless."

"And it always pretends to be something other than what it is."
~ Adeel Mangi in /5 above
E.g., it pretends to be about "working-class" "economic anxiety," when it's really about economic elites rigging the political system to facilitate the flow of wealth from the bottom sectors of society to those who are already grossly rich — and exacerbating social hostilities and hatreds based in race, gender, national origin, religious affiliation, etc., to enable this transfer of wealth.
"America’s CEOs are in a race to crawl as far up Trump’s ass as fast as possible."
~ Dan Pfeiffer
But don't forget the drill: it's really all about the "economic anxiety" of the "working classes" which the Democrats have ignored.

"The percentage of kindergarten students with vaccine exemptions reached an all-time high in Arkansas and across the nation in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
~ John Lyon
As Lyon reports, the rate of vaccine exemptions for school children in Arkansas has risen steadily from 2015-6 up to now — in Trump-voting, solidly red Arkansas, one should note.

"When Americans think of dictators they always think of some foreign model. If anyone turned up here in a fur hat, boots and a grim look he would be recognized and shunned…But when our dictator turns up you can depend on it that he will be one of the boys, and he will stand for everything traditionally American."

If they don’t have the courage to stand up to him, and established news organizations seem to be acting out of fear, what does it mean for the rest of us?”

@wdlindsy with a working & middle class pumelled by a globalist elite. Fascism in the 20th Century was the symptom of an even more cynical disease
@neotheluddite We’ll see.
@wdlindsy We did see and we have those conditions now, again in countries across the globe. Societies literally and effectively sanctioned for wars they didn't start or don't support. Foreign interests extracting tax money from sovereign peoples and central banking & financial systems complicit in the wealth transfer away from them, taking their cut.
@wdlindsy it's terrifying. So many rich who are rich because they lack compassion and are willing to step over people to make a buck.
Some of the nicest people I ever met, are/were homeless.
@wdlindsy Netflix is canceled in this household
@JosjeT A wise decision, I think. I myself have never subscribed to it.
@wdlindsy … not news …
@wdlindsy Since you chose to highlight this section from the piece (which was a good piece apart from this quote), why would not failing to speak to the working people be excluded from the reasons?
I fail to see why Trump getting the working class vote is somehow unimportant?
I think here’s a classic example of simplistic ”two things can’t be true at the same time” reasoning
Sure. Single-issue rallying cries are actually what makes politics go around. But analysis should be deeper
The 'working class" generally is too busy, preoccupied, and ignorant to have a clue what he's really up to, or that cretin Musk.
@sobroquet @wdlindsy But if they too stupid to change, how are you going to turn the tide?
Aren’t you basically giving up, handing over victory?
Sorry I’m being a bit spicy here. But there is a working class, it is big, it is real, and it’s poor.
There are always more poor people. Being poor makes people lack choices. Lacking choices generally appears to others as stupid.
But we the educated are always the minority. Poor & poorly educated are always majority.
SCOTUS told Trump he is king. Is anyone surprised that he is acting like one? Just wait until he receives his crown Jan. 20 .
This is what the election was about: MAGA won, WOKE lost and mad King Donald is on the loose.
@Dave_Goldsmith @wdlindsy Yep, I reckon on day 1 we will be subjected to the most flagrant abuses.
nothing like the smell of a work camp in the morning
If you don't have a puny million tithe to pay the king, then clearly you don't matter.
@Blort Well-stated.
@wdlindsy
Among the unvaccinated this will likely lead to shorter and less healthy lifespans. Odd that people would target their own children.
Arkansas--"The Land of Opportunity"?
peace
@wdlindsy I suppose since the right wingers will want schools separate to those they think are less than them, and won't let their children play with children of anyone they perceive that way, this could be a compounding problem.
@wdlindsy One wonders what will come next. Are the CEOs hoping for military assistance if there is a workplace labor action? Or are they simply buying ‘protection’ from the mob boss? Protection from tax investigations?
There is a new board game developing here and it makes Monopoly seem one-dimensional in comparison.
@bouriquet @wdlindsy >> Are the CEOs hoping for military assistance if there is a workplace labor action?
Some of them, surely, and it would not be the first time in American history if it were to happen.
Turkeys voted for Christmas, didn't they?
This is what this election was about and what makes it so sad. The price of eggs, gas, mortgages or anything else were just covers and excuses for what people were really voting for -- continued white privilege.
Ever since Nixon, I have been waiting and hoping that the "next generation" would see this and begin to vote for tolerance and actual liberty. But it has never happened and I am afraid will not happen in my lifetime.
Amazing just how closely the actions of the Aggrieved White "Christian" Cis Hyper-Male resemble the actions by folks of similar attitude during the medieval crusades...
History really does rhyme.
