"What has happened at MSNBC in the last several days is such an orgy of bad faith and bad ideas that it may be an industry record. Joy Reid? Gone. Jonathan Capehart? Lost his show. Alex Wagner? Lost her show and demoted. Ayman Mohyeldin? Lost his show."

"In a stunning announcement today, Jeff Bezos declared that The Washington Post's opinion section will now exclusively focus on 'personal liberties and free markets.' …
Today's announcement takes things to an entirely new level of billionaire meddling."

"The audacity of claiming that free market ideas are 'underserved' in American media is staggering. Has Bezos somehow missed the existence of The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Bloomberg, Fox Business, CNBC, and countless other outlets that have spent decades championing free-market capitalism?"

"The message could not be clearer: editorial independence is dead at the Washington Post. Opinion editor David Shipley, recognizing this fact, has already resigned rather than oversee this ideological narrowing. ...
Democracy dies in darkness? No, it dies when billionaires decide they want their media properties to serve their personal ideological agendas rather than the public interest."

"The Opinions section is being told what their opinions are to be, from now on. And they seem to align with current thinking by the Trump regime’s current scumbag leaders. …
From a very quick survey by me of Wapo staffers: This is the worst thing to happen to The Washington Post ever in its 147 year life, including the Janet Cooke scandal."

"At Tuesday’s media briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the White House will now decide who attends briefings, an effort to insulate President Trump from tough scrutiny. She also offered awful spin about the developing Elon Musk fiasco."

"At key moments, Leavitt visibly seethed at the media. And we think we know why: On Tuesday, consumer confidence registered another big drop, and Leavitt was simply unable to defend the glaring Trump-Musk failures we’re seeing."
"When billionaires take control of our communication channels, it’s not a win for free speech. It’s a win for billionaire babble.
When they talk of 'personal liberties and free markets' they mean their own liberties to become even richer and more powerful, as the rest of America slides into greater economic insecurity and fear."

"It’s craven. He’s basically fearful of Trump. He has decided that, as timid and tepid as the editorials have been, they’ve been too tough on Trump.
[Bezos is] saying they’re going to have an opinion page with one point of view. That’s an invitation to the editorial writers and the columnists to take a hike."

@wdlindsy Will it be long before Wapo readers get opinion pieces like this infamous one from the Daily Mail in January 1934?
@wood5y Thanks — a valuable reminder.
@wdlindsy We can't let all that post-war progress be destroyed.
The UK and USA are no longer the countries into which we were born and are immeasurably better for not being so.
@wdlindsy
Which is one of the reasons that large for-profit social media is a Bad Idea.
@wdlindsy Yep. He wants to sell pens and toner to the office managers at the concentration camps.
@wdlindsy Exactly, there's a reason these people buy all the social media apps, all of the media outlets, all of the housing, and all of the retailers, and then pretend to support a free market.
When you own all of the market, you get to decide what quality is. There's no competition and no option to pick other than whatever you want to offer.
@PimentoMori @wdlindsy
I'm confident this is exactly the reasoning behind naming a company 'X' or taking a dumpster on wheels that explodes when you look at it wrong and claiming it's THE symbol for status and power.
The fact that these things suck is a really big part of how they express superiority.
@wdlindsy You should go on you tu ever Spotify and listen to the song I'D LOVE TO CHANGE THEVWORLD by 10 years after. Asongfrom the late sixties and 70's. This song really applies today.
@wdlindsy
Silver lining? More reporting on what they do and less on what they say…
@wdlindsy Hmm, how much longer will she last?! Maybe DOGE would like to take a look at her.
@wdlindsy
I don't want to see her face again until this changes. They're not giving information anyway, why is the press still showing up for this submission fest?
The WaPo have been headed this way since early post-Watergate, which was explained away by the powers that be as "an excess of democracy" that needed to be reined in, lest it destroy the hegemony of those in power.
But that movement has never experienced the excess of ketamines and steroids brought in by Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
