"Despite their constant reassurances to the contrary, Republicans have officially begun the process of cutting Medicaid and SNAP benefits to offset the cost of tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. And right on cue, Republicans are playing dumb."

Brian Tyler Cohen · Republicans play dumb on Medicaid cutsBy Brian Tyler Cohen

"Medicaid is especially important for rural and small-town Americans, even if they aren’t beneficiaries themselves, because it helps keep health care accessible."

Paul Krugman · Cruel and Usual: Republicans Prepare to Gut MedicaidBy Paul Krugman

"All in all, if Republicans think they can slash Medicaid without paying a heavy political price, because only Those People will be hurt, they’re going to be mightily surprised. According to one recent poll, 71 percent of Trump voters say that cutting Medicaid would be unacceptable."

"What we’re seeing is that for all the talk about how the G.O.P. is now the party of the working class, the policy agenda is as cruelly plutocratic as ever: Take away health care from Americans who need it so you can cut taxes for the wealthy."

"President in Name Only (PINO) Donald Trump and acting president Elon Musk might be able to bamboozle some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot bamboozle all of the people all of the time (to paraphrase Lincoln)."

The Contrarian · Reality CountsBy Jennifer Rubin

"And, hard as they may try, not even Fox News or the rest of the captive MAGA media can hide inflation, layoffs, and consistently bad economic news. That is a problem for a president who misled the voters by campaigning on how easily he would 'bring down' prices."

"And so here we are. Remarkably, we have gone from an economy that was the 'envy of the world' to 'a scary place to invest' in the brief time the Musk-Trump administration has been in power."

"Donald Trump’s assault on the US federal government and the world’s interlinked manufacturing system have together reached an economic tipping point.

'It seems almost unavoidable that we are headed for a deep, deep recession,' said Jesse Rothstein, Berkeley professor and former chief economist at the US labour department."

The Telegraph · Economists are starting to worry about a serious Trump recessionBy Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

As NBC News reports, having been burned in their attempt to talk to voters about the Musk-Trump agenda, Republicans are shuttind down town halls. And, after all, as NBC also notes, Republicans have more important business anyway, like enacting "even deeper spending and tax cuts through legislation that could add as much as $4.5 trillion to the national debt over the next decade."

NBC News · House Republicans hit the brakes on town halls after blowback over Trump's cutsBy Melanie Zanona
William Lindsey :toad:

"So how will Republicans sell these cuts to their voters?

It’s a tried and true move for autocratic governments. To lock up their enemies and assert power over government agencies and power centers, they claim that they need to go in with a flamethrower to burn out 'fraud, waste and abuse' in the government."

The Big Picture · GOP House Budget 'Blueprint' Gets Spun By MAGABy The Big Picture

"Republicans are preparing a budget bill in which safety net programs — especially SNAP (what we used to call food stamps) and Medicaid, which now serves 72 million Americans (plus another 7 million kids in its subsidiary program CHIP) — will be slashed mercilessly in order to pay for trillions of dollars in tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations."

The Cross Section · The Republican "Fraud" LieBy Paul Waldman

"Those cuts will be justified by claiming that the programs are beset by 'fraud,' as Speaker of the House Mike Johnson explains. 'Medicaid is hugely problematic because it has a lot of fraud, waste, and abuse,' Johnson says, claiming that there is '$50 billion a year in fraud alone in Medicaid.'”

@wdlindsy They don't need to sell it to voters if they don't care about holding elections in future (remember, the convict told them they'd only have to vote one more time - he has no intention of holding legitimate elections again, if he even bothers to hold them at all).

@wdlindsy Maybe they can consult with their friend Rick Scott about the fraud, he's an expert in the matter.

@wdlindsy ask Rick Scott if that’s true.

Fraudulent practises by the #privatehealth sector is a common problem. In #Australia , the same sort of issues were a plague on our National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and it was bleeding $ to unscrupulous contracted service providers. The solution offered by right wing politicians was to cut #NDIS funding. Our Labor govt instead increased funding and culled grifting service providers out. Best outcomes for those depending on the financial help meant for those with disability.
