"The Christian nationalism, exceptionalism, and white supremacy ascendant in Trump 2.0 has evolved from a long genealogy that has enabled an elite strata of mostly white Christian men to rule society and amass enormous wealth and power throughout American history.

Such Christians have always anointed themselves with the lie of divine righteousness, while insisting that they are God’s chosen representatives on Earth."

"To maintain this charade, they have brandished the Bible like a cudgel, bludgeoning poor people, people of color, the Indigenous, women, LGBTQ+ people, and others with tales of their supposed sinfulness meant to distract, demean, divide, and dispossess."

"The story the evangelical movement tells about itself is that it is a Bible-honoring rebuke to mainline churches that were absorbing progressive values and abandoning the historic tenets of the faith. In actuality, the evangelical movement became a vehicle driven by a culture war agenda that used its religion mostly to grant theological justification for its political ambitions."

"Thanks to the political muscle of white Christian nationalist Evangelicals, and the financial backing of revanchist billionaires like the Kochs, the movement that started as the Tea Party and grew into MAGA became a ruthlessly successful RINO-hunting machine, executing a hostile takeover of both the Republican Party and state governments."

Weekend Reading · America’s Second “Redemption”By Michael Podhorzer

"The pope’s enforced absence from the world stage has served as a reminder of his importance, as universal values are repudiated and cast aside in the name of a narrow and aggressive national self-interest. …

The weaponisation of Christianity as a means of cultural exclusion, and as a justification for illiberal policymaking, has been a key feature of this shift in the zeitgeist."

The Guardian · The Guardian view on Pope Francis: protecting a progressive legacyBy Editorial

The latest egregious example is JD Vance....

An eventual power struggle is inevitable, in which Mr Vance and Washington’s other high-profile Maga Catholic, Steve Bannon, may try to bring a Trumpian influence to bear. For now though, it is good to see the vice-president’s arch-antagonist in the Vatican apparently on the mend. His advocacy on behalf of ;the global common good' has never been more relevant."

@wdlindsy Partisanship has (T)trumped checks and balances: the congress won't stand up to Trump because of partisanship, even when Trump will not defer to the Judiciary, even when Trump usurps the power of the Legislative.

This is a big deal, at least to me, because if men and women who swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution do not respect checks and balances - the bedrock, fundamental theory of the Constitution - then they do not deserve to old their offices.

How silly and naïve I was to think that no matter what us Americans disagreed and fought about, one thing we all took seriously was our Constitution.

@wdlindsy Religion is a scam. They only want to pretend they have values. They don't, and window dressing bronze age morality is disgusting. Perpetuating the myths that telling people lies is for their own good is inhuman. Besides, Christians fighting Christians about who has the truth is like Lex Luthor fighting the Joker over who gets to kill Batman. Religion is killing people!

@wdlindsy

There has always been an uncomfortable truth that religions have maintained their hold on ppl, not through the acts of kindness and compassion taught within the pages of holy texts, but by man-made intolerance, cruelty and persecution.
We only need to look at the medieval èra for examples of fear and persecution
