On Tuesday, an Iranian doctoral student on a student visa at University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa was arrested by ICE. On the same day, Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish doctoral student and Fulbright Scholar at Tufts University in Boston, was arrested by ICE and has now been disappeared, evidently to an ICE prison in Louisiana. She, too, is on a student visa. She was picked up on the street by people in hoods and masks.

The Tufts student newspaper suggests that Ozturk was apprehended because of an article she wrote in that newspaper in support of Palestinians.
In both cases, ICE refuses to offer any explanation of why these students have been apprehended.

Any of us watching these events and NOT thinking of what happened in Nazi Germany as the fascist regime consolidated its power and brought down an iron curtain of terror is missing an important lesson from the history of the 20th century.
The lesson: it can happen here.
When meanness — hostility towards targeted minority people — becomes not merely permitted but widely justified (They're criminals! They must have done something wrong! They're Muslims, after all) and celebrated, a society is in rapid decline towards dictatorship.
And no one is safe when that happens. It begins by targeting them.
It ends by targeting you and me.
"In 2025, America is disappearing and detaining brown-skinned immigrants with tattoos and pro-Palestinian college students because their opinions are deemed threats to foreign policy as the Trump Administration is literally sharing classified information and military strikes openly on an unsecured Signal chat with journalists.
What a time to be alive."

"This is what secret police do in authoritarian regimes in service to dictators. Words like Stasi, Gestapo, and Savak apply. … This regime is cracking down on anyone and everyone they deem a threat. This includes French researchers, Lebanese doctors, Filipinos who have been here for 50 years, and a white Canadian actress who was detained for two weeks."
"By the time a federal judge ordered that Ozturk not be moved outside Massachusetts, she had already been transferred to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Louisiana — more than 1,400 miles from where she was seized.
This is the latest in a disturbing pattern."

"The Trump administration is essentially claiming it can detain noncitizens for expressing views it deems problematic, with no specific criminal charges and without providing evidence. If this doesn't concern you because you disagree with the political views of those being detained, then you were never actually concerned about free speech — you were just concerned about protecting certain viewpoints."
"This Is the land of wolves now. Masked agents snatching people off the street. Government officials using caged prisoners for propaganda videos. We are the villains. …
It’s only been eight weeks.
I cannot imagine what this country will look like in a year."
~ Jonathan V. Last
"She stepped onto a sidewalk in Boston — and vanished into Trump’s shadow state. Masked ICE agents are now snatching dissidents off the streets like a scene from Stalin’s Russia. This isn’t speculative fiction. It’s happening right now, in America."

"The pattern of detentions shows the Trump administration is targeting foreign students for their pro-Palestinian political views. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Ozturk was detained under the same law used to detain Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist."

"Having studied the Holocaust and historical memory, it’s haunting to be living through a period where cruelty and dehumanization is being normalized in real time. …
On top of everything, we learned that Timothy Snyder and Jason Stanley, leading scholars of authoritarianism, have left or are leaving the country."

@wdlindsy
I started to use the ‘F’ word in ‘00 after the sElection! Fascism! Now I use the ‘N’ word: Nazis!
I don't believe humanity has ever been so forewarned fellow citizen William Lindsey
But just as in the 20th century, we elected evil twice.
As greed became the primary concern.

Whats really the difference now between America 2025 and Nazi Germany, Israel, Sudan, and all the other fascist countries in the world who are or were destroying human life?
Not much as far as I can see..
@wdlindsy Looking at that photograph this question passed through my mind: How long would Kristi N. last if she were inside that cage?
@wdlindsy Isn’t that the same dude who once wrote in The Weekly Standard about how Darth Vader is the hero of the story and the Imperials are the good side?
I think that’s him. I think he is quite capable of imagining.
@wdlindsy If "Homeland Security" can do this to her, they will find a way to do it to any citizen who expresses an opinion they don't like. I'm frightened for her and for us.
@wdlindsy The Trump administration is a step away from arresting citizens who it doesn’t like.
