Landry Ayres notes,

"The White House is using national security as a pretext for suppressing ideological dissidents."

And this is "part of a larger pattern—one that threatens not just immigrants, but all of us."

The UnPopulist · Trump's Cruel and Lawless Deportations: Our Video RoundupBy Landry Ayres

"They are flexing their powers and normalizing their fascist behavior by going after the most vulnerable and marginalized among us. They are punishing innocent immigrants, college students, and foreign academics. They have expanded their targets to include law firms, media companies, and judges, and it will eventually include anyone who dares defy their authoritarian dictates."

"People are being swept off the streets right now, every day, and being detained without legitimate cause. The administration is fast-forwarding to its desired conclusion and daring the courts to stop it, while also choosing which court orders to obey and which to defy. Even if the judiciary were somehow able to stop all of this, the chilling effect remains—which, after all, is the point."

The New Republic · The Biggest Scandal of the Second Trump Term Isn’t “Signalgate”The national security chat debacle certainly merits attention. But the Trump administration is now blatantly disappearing students and others who are in the country legally.

"The Trump administration is requiring that foreign students studying in, or seeking to study in the United States, pass an ideological test in order to obtain a visa, according to a “sensitive” State Department directive issued by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and which I obtained. ...

The directive, dated March 25, bears the subject line 'Enhanced Screening and Social Media Vetting for Visa Applicants.'”

Ken Klippenstein · Trump Admin Spies on Social Media of Student Visa HoldersBy Ken Klippenstein

"As U.S. President Donald Trump pledges to deport 'millions and millions' of 'criminal aliens,' thousands of federal law enforcement officials from multiple agencies are being enlisted to take on new work as immigration enforcers, pulling crime-fighting resources away on other areas -- from drug trafficking and terrorism to sexual abuse and fraud."

"Just so it’s clear: It does not END with snatching people off the street on student visas who advocate positions the regime doesn't approve of—that is how it BEGINS."

@wdlindsy I would just like to ask the self-identified Muslim voters in Michigan the following. How's that Jill Stein vote working out for you! While what is going on is terrible and revolting, I'm more and more convinced that you can't help stupid. The only way some people are forced to actually use their comprehension skills is when they fuck around and find out. But, I daresay, even then some will get lost in the delusion of why it's happening to them.

@wdlindsy Well that's total bullshit, though. No one is 'forcing' any of these people to enforce the raping felon's idiocy. They CHOOSE to do so.

Ask yourself what kind of gaping scumbag will follow this asshole's orders.

ALL of this would come to a screeching halt if the goons had a conscience. They're no better than Hitler's army.

@wdlindsy

The billionaires behind Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation, paid Oracle to develop a list of "loyalists" so Trump & Musk could hit the ground running, once in office.

It's equally likely that the same folks drafted a list of dissenters, climate advocates, pro-democracy lawyers, academics, scientists, civil rights organizations, and get-out-the-vote nonprofits.

@wdlindsy

The ('the') problem is, this will continue to turn into a bigger and bigger administrative and implementational disaster, which means lots of people will be stuck in limbo effectively forever.
Or until the next government, anyway.

@wdlindsy Two thoughts on the Trump regime vetting the social media posts of student visa applicants:

1) It would not be difficult to fake a MAGA-ized social media persona, especially if you were affiliated with a foreign intelligence service.

2) Decreeing that US employers must vet the social media of *American* job applicants for instances of improper thought is consistent with the moral collapse of these people.

@wdlindsy

The brain drain is already in progress leaving the USA

Just like during the Vietnam War, Canada 🇨🇦 will welcome refugees fleeing the USA

We like science. We like inquiring minds. We like good debate.

@Peter_Panther @xankarn Yes, so it seems, though I think the Trump regime is hardly strong on education.

@wdlindsy

That's not vetting would be student immigrants for their willingness to abide by the law. It's testing them for abject loyalty to Donald Trump and those who follow him. The loser in that scenario will be the US. The good students won't come. The liars will come in droves.

@wdlindsy

It's as if Donald Trump once saw a Monty Python Spanish Inquisitors skit and is using it as a guide to life and politics.
