#WordWeavers 5/27. Do you specifically design your characters, or do they develop as you write?
It depends.
As a pantser I start with, for example, "acrobat in a travelling circus" or "brilliant Anglo-Indian going home", and a name. Then off we go.
My new WIP, CAT PEOPLE, will be plotted to within an inch of its life - because it's very complicated with multiple POVs and throughlines all of which have to end in the same place and at the same time.
For this I do more planning of characters. The actual MC is Sikh, which then required a lot of additional research to ensure what I intend is respectful. But then I'm pushing boundaries.
She's female, of course, but her sexual preferences may or may not become relevant - and that's a potentially contentious point.
The same work goes into all the primary POVs.
However they still develop as I write. I never bother with personality breakdowns - that will come out naturally as things happen.

#WordWeavers 5/20. Other than injuries, do your characters ever have health issues?
Sure.
I do have characters getting ill, sometimes for violent reasons and sometimes because people just do. Even my epic fantasy has a "slice-of-life" style.
Then there's Veronica and her kyphosis, a chronic back deformation which means she's in pain most of the time and can't do a lot of things.
CW: Female nudity. This is one of my earliest renders but I like it. It tries to show Veronica's back curvature and she's holding her neck weirdly because of it.
#ScribesAndMakers 5/13. Shameless self-promotion day. Let's boost away.
I have launched my ko-fi shop currently featuring wallpapers for desktop, tablet and mobile, featuring mermaids (for #merMay) but will be getting other images.
https://ko-fi.com/adaddinsane/shop
Also, buy my books: https://taupress.com/books
Well that's been a day.
*TEST MY SHOP*
Finally got the first pack of downloadable wallpapers sorted out on Ko-Fi.
Unfortunately the image I'm using (a 3D render created by me) has been particularly annoying.
Hence it's taken all day.
The item in question is currently free, because I'm testing to make sure it all works.
So if *you* want to try it out (it'll cost you nothing) and maybe give me some feedback on whether it all works and you can access the files, it's here:
"You've got this, kid. You don't need me for those jesters!"

#WordWeavers 5/4. Describe something unusual/interesting about one of your characters’ looks or style.
Let's choose Veronica. She's the MC of my erotica series "Veronica's Life".
She has kyphosis, which is a form of spine curvature. She has trouble looking up without straining, and has chronic pain.
Being born in the late Victorian era there were lots of attempts to "straighten" her - many extremely painful - because she's a taint on the family, and eugenics was a big thing at the time.
When the attempts failed, her parents basically abandoned her - they're aristocrats and rich but they moved out of the mansion and left her alone with the servants (many are unpleasant and some cruel). She hasn't seen them in years.
Yup. Erotica.
Also steampunk and historically accurate (except where it isn't).
It's a story of self-discovery and empowerment.
#ScribesAndMakers 4/25. Do you have any indie marketing strategies that work well? Please share if you're willing.
I don't bother promoting on social media. I advertise on FB - if you do it right, it does work.
Having said that, I'm building a ko-fi site to sell 3D renders. And I will be using my specially written website to push promotions to social media.

Departure
I was in the mood for some very classic Star Trek.
TOS Connie by Marc Bell, Shuttle Galileo by Raul Mamoru, I reshadered it for C4D/Redshift.

#WritersCoffeeClub 4/20. What rôle does religion play in your writing?
When I'm writing historical it's important and included, though that doesn't mean characters aren't sceptical - some are, some aren't.
In one series, the MC is called the avatar of Durga Ma by a guru who's trying to overthrow the British in India. And people latch on to it, calling her a goddess - which she hates although is not above using it from time to time.
My fantasy world has a complex set of religions though you don't see them much, they also change over time. The "World's Pattern" is a big thing as is the Mother. Then a character gets called the Daughter, which she also hates. (Is this a pattern?) Non-humans have their own belief systems.
In CAT PEOPLE the MC, Geeta Kholi (pictured), has been brought up in the Sikh tradition, and some of the action is based around the local gurdwara.
Yeah, religions definitely play a part because people are always people.
#WordWeavers 4/20. If someone gave you a million dollars (or equivalent) to never write again, would you take it?
Would I be tempted? Yes.
Would I do it? No.
There's an argument that says I could switch to 3D rendering but I cannot help but tell stories so I'd want to be writing comics. That doesn't work either.
In regard to this image, the speech bubble is literally part of the 3D scene, it wasn't added afterwards.
#WordWeavers 4/19. Have you ever learned something about yourself from your characters?
Not exactly but the realisation I was bi (after 57 years) was triggered by an extremely powerful (unrelated) scene I was writing.
It just made so much sense.
Image CW: Female nudity and implied violence
This image is a representation of the above-mentioned scene. It is not what it looks like.
The female character was not unwilling but neither is it BDSM (the male character was *not* willing). It's very complicated.
#WritersCoffeeClub 4/16. How present is music in your work?
It varies. My fantasy stories have the occasional feast with musicians.
The second book I ever wrote (lost to the world) had a band as the four main characters. And I went full-on describing gigs.
My soon-to-be WIP starts at a gig by a really bad punk band. (But not Blondie obviously, which is the band depicted in the image.)
#WritersCoffeeClub 4/15. **World Art Day!** What visual artist is most present in your work?
Probably me.
EDIT: Just going to expand on that.
In my imagination my stories have always been 3D full-colour motion pictures. I could never re-create that so I started writing them down. I just write down the story as I imagine it happening.
It's one reason I've always had a strong interest in 3D graphics starting back in the 80s.
Then the world finally caught up with me, and now I *can* create versions of what I imagine.
CW: Eye-contact.
#WordWeavers 4/14. Who is your kindest character and how do they show it?
"Don't mistake kindness for weakness."
I suppose, of all my characters, Polly is the kindest. She's Veronica's maid, and lover.
Apparently it's #NationalUnicornDay (and why not).
Here's a picture I rendered earlier, not my best work, but putting it out here for anyone who can recognise the story being referenced.
