Saw #LastBreath at my local AMC & just received the #DVD.

The ending was predictable but the tension in the movie trying to figure out how it would happen was still engaging.

All too often when an Asian actor is cast in a US made movie, some mention or reference of his/her race is often made in order somehow excuse or justify the casting.

So, I liked how Simu's race was never mentioned & didn't matter in his playing an experienced diver in the film.

"Ms. Hui’s detention has forced a rural Missouri county to face the fallout of President Trump’s immigration crackdown, which was supported in theory by many residents in this Trump-loving corner of an increasingly red America.

Many are now asking how you can support Carol and also Mr. Trump."

Ming Li Hui, known to people in Kennett, Mo., as Carol, spoke from jail by video link to Liridona Ramadani, whose family owns the restaurant where Carol worked.

The Portland event inspired by Asian night markets will bring together 50 small businesses for an evening celebrating the intersection between #veganism and #Asian cultures"

"A San Francisco boy with a rare bone marrow disease has been on the waitlist for more than a year.

One of his biggest challenges is finding a donor that matches his specific ethnicity: Chinese and Vietnamese.

NBC Bay Area's Gia Vang has more on this emerging problem. Watch her report in the video above."

“I can’t speak for other people, I don’t know what their thoughts are, but I do hear them ask questions,” Dry said. “‘Surely this is a mistake,’ or ‘What did she do wrong?’ or ‘Carol’s not a criminal, why is this happening to her?’”

Dry said Mayorga’s detainment has been eye-opening for residents.

“Something like this brings it home because it makes it personal.”

Carol Mayorga — a Kennett, Missouri woman — went to St. Louis last month for what she thought was a routine meeting with immigration officials to renew a work visa. Instead, they shackled her and are now trying to deport her to Hong Kong.

An interesting person & an interesting video interview . . .

"How does the daughter of a Mexican mother and a Chinese-American father develop a love for African American literature? By visiting Russia.

'There is no canon of me,” says Stephanie Li, Duke’s new research professor of African & African American Studies. “There is no Chinese-Mexican-American canon of literature to read.'

Instead, she started with Dostoevsky."

Not lost on me that as birthright citizenship is being challenged today, it was because of Wong Kim Ark that we have it at all.

It’s AANHPI month, which we are celebrating at work. I complain these terms are arbitrary (and they are) but also they think we are all the same anyway.

While I can’t do a ton about national legislation, I can do a lot in my community. As an East Asian person, making space for South, Southeast and other Asians and NH (Native Hawaiian) and PI (Pacific Islander) people is absolutely what I want to do. I’m helping to organize some activities at work that spotlight other cultures in our alphabet soup.

Also RIP Henry Fuhrmann, whose exhortation to drop the hyphen in Asian-American vastly expanded and included people who can consider themselves Asian American. Undocumented people. People who don’t yet have citizenship, or won’t, or can’t.
