Congress has reintroduced the Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act (TCIEA). This bill works to ensure that people with disabilities are not paid subminimum wage under an almost 100-year-old piece of legislation that allows certain businesses with a specific certificate to do so. The bill will work to eliminate such working environments and help transition people currently in such settings into a more integrated work situation. To ask your member of Congress to support the bill, go to speak4.app/lp/9801enwx/?ts=175.

Ok I debated making this but it cannot hurt. I hope all my fellow #Blind, #DeafBlind, and #VisuallyImpaired people, along with their family, friends, and others have had a great time at the #ACB and/or #NFB 2025 conventions. I am taking this time, and the increased activity on certain hashtags to do some shameless promotion of #OurBlind. OurBlind comprises the Discord, Lemmy, and Reddit communities operated by the staff of the r/Blind subreddit, as well as those who have joined since the creation of the Discord in 2022, and Lemmy in 2023. We have members from all over the world, and of all ages, hearing and vision levels, and are a safe space for Our LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse friends. Our general community guidelines, and the links to reach our platforms can be found on our website.

OurBlindOurBlindWelcome to OurBlind Join Us Reddit Discord Lemmy Who We Are OurBlind is a community of blind and visually impaired people, their family and friends, and allies, from around the world. Its members comprise the spectrum of age, gender, orientation, and geography, however we hold one thing in common: we live life with and around blindness in a sighted world. Though occasionally challenging, we know the blind can live fulfilling lives just as everyone else. Whether you’ve been blind or visually impaired since birth or are beginning your journey, or you’re sharing that journey with somebody else, we’re happy to have you.

A few questions for the #ACB25 hive mind, and I really do hope there is one. First, and probably most important, how does one pull down the window shades? For the life of me, I can’t figure it out, and mine are wide open. Not a good look, probably literally. Also, can anyone tell me where the exhibit area is in relations to the elevators? Apparently the messages #ACB sent out with all of that info were bouncing for me, so I have no idea where I’m supposed to go, and I’m exhibiting. Thanks for any info.

As we said months ago when the city council voted for this dragnet spy network, there are now people whose entire day and life will be on these cameras.

Each of these near neighborhood-wide deployments cover critical services and in some cases enough essential services that a person might be on camera everytime they leave home for years on end.

Anyone who is blind, or who has worked with the blind, knows how expensive our technology can be. This couldn't be more true with relation to braille displays. Even the cheapest costs at least $799, and it's already behind the newest in that line, at $899. This is the Orbit Reader 20 and 20+. Now, a student in India wants to change that by creating a display that is truly affordable (under $50)! Please pass this on, so that we can give him greater recognition within the blind community. Even if it costs a bit more than he initially suspected it would, there is no excuse for the $2,000 to $5,000 average price of such technology when cheaper alternatives can be designed! He is determined to bring this to market, so let's help him do it and show our appreciation for his hard work on this life-changing project!
