During a New Moon, the Moon is positioned between the Sun and Earth, meaning very little sunlight is reflected off its surface, giving us darker skies for optimal stargazing.

Visitors to the observatory will have an opportunity to view our 1-metre and 60-centimetre telescopes, speak with astronomy students, learn what it means to be an astronomer, find out about the latest research and discoveries. There will be guided tours of the building, along with a special Observatory Treasure Hunt.
Smaller portable telescopes will be available for visitor use, weather permitting.

Who doesn't love space? It captures our imaginations and makes us wonder if we are truly alone. This is a great Doors Open option for young visitors and the young at heart.

Visitors should note that there are dim light conditions and stairs-only access (unfortunately no lifts or ramps are available) in the observatory and sturdy close-toed shoes are recommended.
Last admittance will be at 4:30 PM ET.

When it is farthest from us, it is called apogee; and when it is nearest, it is called perigee. Join us this evening for an exciting talk on Measuring the Night Sky with guest speaker John Wilmot. John Wilmot's interest in astronomy began in childhood with constellation identification in Cub Scouts. After a period of casual observation with small telescopes, his passion deepened in 2004 with the purchase of a serious telescope and subsequent involvement in a local astronomy club. Following a brief hiatus, he resumed the hobby, quickly completing the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's 'Explore the Universe' program. Currently, he is engaged in sketching the Messier objects and serves as a director of the Barrie Astronomy Club, where he presents on astronomical topics. John has also delivered presentations at the Barrie Public Library, sharing his enthusiasm for the night sky with both adults and children.
