@gettie I mean, yeah #ARM & #ARM64 ain't "#mainstream" -yet.

  • #Apple obviously does utilize their #SingleVendor - approach for very tight integration extremely well, unlike any other vendor.

That being said I'd still prefer some craptastic chinese netbook simply because it has some regular-ass #UEFI / #BIOS and I can shove any OS on it that I want...

“Who knew giving a ton of money to #CERN would lead to the #WWW? Who knew a Dutch free #OS (#minix) would incentivise a Finnish gradute student to write #Linux (the OS platform on most the cloud, half the smart phones out there)? Who knew that some small TV company (the #BBC) request for a simple low cost computer would lead to the founding of #ARM (that has more chips in the world than Intel or anyone else - again in your mobile device)?” 💯

The long awaited Black Magic Debug V2.0.0 release is finally here! It is a big update with a lot of improvements and newly supported targets. It pairs very well with bmputil, make sure to give it a try! See release notes for more details. Thanks to everyone who contributed! 🙂 github.com/blackmagic-debug/bl Discuss: github.com/blackmagic-debug/bl #opensource #debugger #electronics #jtag #swd #arm #riscv

Time for #AMD to come on with #clearest #linux? Or maybe #nvidia takes the place of both? Can x86 survive? Between #apple, #raspberrypi and #qualcomm (+ others)? This feels like a "writing on the wall" moment... X86 joining Motorola, sparc, powerpc, z80 and the rest?

I have had more #arm nodes than most since 2011 (pis) @stalbaum if you think I am shitting. I will drop a hot take on you, as an old schooler: the N100 is the last great value CPU. $25 a core high perf!

www.phoronix.comIntel Announces It's Shutting Down Clear LinuxThe most depressing news of the week: Intel is ending their performance-optimized Clear Linux distribution

Earlier in the week I did the fairly small amount of work to bring up Chimera Linux on a recently acquired Radxa ROCK 4C+ single board computer. It almost worked on the first try. The image booted, but there was no HDMI output. I didn't know it was working until this morning, when I hooked up to the serial console and was able to get it on the network.

And some more #Linux thoughts on the absolute ass drama about removing 32 bit libs, I have a #ARM PC and it's CPU is only 64 bits, same goes for my #RISC_V machine, there 32 bit outright does not exist.

AMD and Intel play already with the idea of removing their 32 Bit legacy which would make their CPUs more efficient and also likely remove a few possible attack vectors.

So it's a valid thing to finally talk about the whole topic, remove some legacy crust and find a solution to keep 32 bit software going that can't move on.

The person behind Lutris had also some thoughts that should be considered:

fosstodon.org/@lutris/11476951

FosstodonLutris (@lutris@fosstodon.org)Linux distros are going to keep on trying to remove their 32bit stack and it's only a matter of time before 32bit gets removed from every major distro. We could have a compatibility layer like Wine, but it may be better to have a full blown emulator given how many components need to be replaced: - i686 -> x86_64 or Arm64 - X11 -> Wayland - OpenGL -> Vulkan - Alsa / OSS -> Pipewire - Old GlibC -> new GlibC etc... While this seems a very daunting task, it should be technically possible

Putting the cable back in the keyboard, and powering on with R pressed, we have a fully function Acorn Archimedes A310!

Amazing, just now gotta do some clean up work with replacing various PSU capacitors, need a new ball for the mouse, and also sort out the power button on the monitor (I'm having to hold it in to keep it on), and now time to also plan what interesting things to do with an Archimedes.

Thread: I bought an Acorn Archimedes A310

This is the first consumer device with a RISC based processor (a few high end workstations preceded it) and the first wide public release of the ARM processor (the CPU inside of it is literally referred to as the ARM)

Managed to get it with the original cords, manuals, box for the monitor, mouse mat, and the purchase receipt :blobfoxlaughsweat: just had to get it back to Nottingham from Llandudno on the train...
