The Bastard Instrument: A Cultural History of the Electric Bass

I have to contact the author Brian F Wright and maybe we can trade books

Offer him the experience of reading another #MusicHistory of an overlooked instrument 🪗

Bit of #accordion overlap in country music and conjunto

I wrote about the significance of the #bass (replacing the rhythm section of big bands, and the left-hand of the accordion), so there’s probably about as much overlap in both books

Five 🎸’s!

Brian F. WrightThe Bastard Instrument: A Cultural History of the Electric Bass — Brian F. WrightPublished by the University of Michigan Press, The Bastard Instrument chronicles the history of the electric bass and the musicians who played it, from the instrument’s invention through its widespread acceptance at the end of the 1960s.

Found this fabulous history of the bass guitar 🎸 that is almost exactly the same format, size and style as my #AccordionRevolution book but for the #bass

It’s written for the lay person, has little sections so you can read it straight through or in little chunks, has black-and-white pictures to break up the text 📖

Feels like getting to read my own book for the first time, without having to write it

Very cool 😎

Just a couple days after International Workers Day, but here for #BandcampFriday "ROUGH MUSIC" speaks of the working conditions on seagoing vessels.

Historian Marcus Rediker has lots to say about how seamen recognized their power as hired labor - a unique perspective in human history. He is worth checking out.

Rough Music is the sounds sailors would make to indicate that they were not happy with working conditions.
