Harry Sintonen<p>The dosdude1's video about restoring <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> destroyed A12Z-based Apple Silicon Developer Transition Kit (DTK) brought up some interesting bits, such as that you can interrogate Apple online service for the device serial number and associated device mac addresses (which then can be used to activate the device once correct values are restored to the SYSCFG). If the devices were physically destroyed and scrapped you'd think Apple would also had removed this information from the online service, effectively making it impossible to reactivate them. I guess there are gaps even in Apple's asinine processes. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reQq8fx4D0Q" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=reQq8fx4D0</span><span class="invisible">Q</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/hardwarehacking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hardwarehacking</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/activationlock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>activationlock</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/partspairing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>partspairing</span></a></p>

Most larger businesses use an MDM solution so they can unlock the devices at will; otherwise they're locked with the employee's iCloud ID, which can be released in Find My. And if the employee doesn't unlock them Apple can override it with proof of purchase. <a href="https://support.apple.com/guide/deployment/activation-lock-depf4ab94ef1/web" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">support.apple.com/guide/deploy</span><span class="invisible">ment/activation-lock-depf4ab94ef1/web</span></a></p>
Stephen Foskett<p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://chaos.social/@Rmogull" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>Rmogull</span></a></span> And lock+encryption gives peace of mind when devices are stolen. I hate that it's turning Apple devices into e-waste but they'd be even more tempting to thieves if not for <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/ActivationLock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivationLock</span></a> </p><p>What's your opinion on these repair shops though? Do they legit have piles of locked not stolen <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/MacBook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MacBook</span></a> and are dumping them like iFixit says or are they likely actually stolen? <a href="https://www.ifixit.com/News/71486/working-macbooks-trashed-over-activation-lock" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">ifixit.com/News/71486/working-</span><span class="invisible">macbooks-trashed-over-activation-lock</span></a></p>
Stephen Foskett<p>If Apple allowed repair shops to override <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/ActivationLock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivationLock</span></a> it would destroy the whole <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/theft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>theft</span></a> deterrent effect. And people are stealing <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/MacBook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MacBook</span></a> and <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/iPhone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>iPhone</span></a> like crazy even with the threat of activation lock (and going to crazy extremes to trick users into overriding the lock). I want old Apple products to be recycled and repaired but Activation Lock is a solution to a different problem.</p>
Stephen Foskett<p>Although I don't use a business <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/MDM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MDM</span></a> solution, they are able to release <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/MacBook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MacBook</span></a> <a href="https://techfieldday.net/tags/ActivationLock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivationLock</span></a> if properly configured. Perhaps these piles of MacBooks were purchased by employees and activated with their own iCloud account rather than the business MDM?</p><p>But even so, Apple can and will override Activation Lock with proof of purchase. And it's inconceivable that a business wouldn't keep the receipt, even just for tax purposes. I just don't buy the story of piles of non-stolen locked MacBooks.</p>
