A big "Thank YOU" to all the people who posted their questions about using Affinity Designer on various forums over the years. I had to quickly throw together a poster and was able to find good answers to ALL of my questions.

The poster turned out well (I hope!) and I now feel at home using Designer. One does not have to pay Adobe a regular fee, you purchase Affinity and can even update for free: affinity.serif.com/

Speaking of #Affinity Publisher: With “press ready” PDF settings, it still exports elements that are 100 percent black (and only black) with a mix of all four CMYK colors!

It’s things like that which make it impossible for me to trust it as a professional tool in a print workflow.

@petergleick Not sure what kind of software you're looking for, but sometimes I use PDFBox command-line tools to split, overlay/underlay and merge PDF files pdfbox.apache.org/3.0/commandl

For editing, some software can import PDFs. I think LibreOffice and Inkscape are FOSS options. I use #affinity Designer which is a reasonably-priced graphics program.

Somebody To Love

This album sits between A Night At The Opera (1975) with bangers like “You’re My Best Friend” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” and News of the World (1977) with the classic “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions”.

On A Day At The Races (1976) we got the super-hits “Somebody To Love” and “Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy”. Talk about being on a roll… It was also the first Queen record I bought.

Well, there’s a lot going on here…

This turned out to be one of the most complex designs I have done since ELO’s “Out of the Blue” cover. So many small details. Now, let’s see if I can realise this idea I have for animating it, as all the creatures are now individual layers / objects… No need for staying tuned, I’ll post when it’s done.

For years people have smirked at my suggestion that subscription pricing was as good a reason as any to stay away from Adobe. Customers held to ransom with price changes.

The only thing I needed from Adobe back then was InDesign, and Affinity Publisher solved that for me very nicely. And very cheaply. When I cancelled, Adobe stung me for an extra 12 months as an exit fee.

Thus, I have never used an Adobe product since.

Everything but the Girl is a Brittish duo consisting of Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn. I’m not usually one for melancholy music, but for EBTG I am happily making an exception. Tracey’s lyrics are good to fantastic, her voice adds to the story by inflicting emotion way beyond the words. The stories are carried by Ben’s superb melodies, instrumentation and production. From early steps in 1984 to massive, worldwide success during the 1990s, I can warmly recommend their entire catalog.

Here’s a portrait I did of Tracey. Her lyrics and stories are right up there with Joni Mitchell and Suzanne Vega. IMHO.

Another quick album cover. I had some challenges finding the exact typeface for the title, but found something close enough to easily edit and adjust.

One thing that took me way too long to realise is that the LED display is representing the faces of Andy, Sting and Stewart. This is the album that included the classic "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic”.

Používám Photo a Publisher a dělám v nich vše kromě vyvolávání RAWček na které je pořád z mé zkušenosti nejlepší Adobe Lightroom.

Konkrétně používám ze zvyku Lightroom Classic.

Každopádně tím, že si za svou grafickou práci ať už přímo či nepřímo účtuji, tak se mi Affinity "zaplatilo" už nespočetněkrát.

Trust – Who do Ya?

So, it’s probably not the best album Prince ever did, but just looking at all his album covers, this is the one that really stands out to me. Also, it’s still a great listen.
