Kudra :maybe_verified:
So, the box air conditioner at my work got infested by pigeons recently who decided it would make a good nest, and subsequently it got full of sticks and stopped working. It probably would have run another 20 years otherwise.

I've spent most of this week trying to get it replaced, and this article just popped up in the Chrome new tab news thingy.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2025-01-28/air-conditioning-changed-australia-technology-heat-comfort/104741512

I assume it's either because I'd been searching for #AirConditioning or because I usually read articles about #ClimateChange, but... yeah. It's really interesting how recent a thing air conditioning has been, really. I lived without it for all of my childhood and definitely for big chunks of my 20s, but when I bought my first house in my 30s it had a box air conditioner, but my 2nd property, a small apartment, didn't, and I didn't even try to install it.

My first two salons did not have aircon, but all the rest since have. The third salon, a large basement in Hay St in Perth, got a "free" air conditioner installed that was 3 phase, massive unit that originally came from a boat! A tradie friend wanted to get rid of it, but it was so big that it needed SIX people to move it. I expect it is still in that basement.

I've since installed several air conditioning units directly, some box and some split. As they get their most use during the day and while solar is peak, I haven't felt too bad about using them, and combined with good insulation / thermal mass, the cost is actually fairly low.

But yes.. I have thought at times about the many buildings that have been built in the last 20-30 years that are simply not liveable without conditioned air, windows aren't even openable in many cases.

It does give one pause.

Electric vehicles, meanwhile, would require an extra 854 TWh, the IEA said."

https://www.ft.com/content/de175bfd-aaf1-4adc-b4b5-3e9973aed522
