ResearchBuzz: Firehose<p>New York Times: Alexa Got an A.I. Brain Transplant. How Smart Is It Now?. This link goes to a gift article. “The bad news is that despite its new capabilities, Alexa+ is too buggy and unreliable for me to recommend. In my testing, it not only lagged behind ChatGPT’s voice mode and other A.I. voice assistants I’ve tried, but was noticeably worse than the original Alexa at some basic tasks. @CenturyAvocado ah, that’s useful, ta!

I know I could pair all my lights (Hue and Tradfri), with my #homeAssistant (which is already #zigbee enabled for sensors), but then I’d lose voice control of the lighting, which is important to us.

I could pair them with Alexa, but then I’d lose home assistant integration.

Voice control is coming to home assistant, but it’s a long way off what #Alexa can do at present, and I don’t want to run two voice assistants in the house! 😳

Seems to have been going on for a couple of years, now. I bought my initial batch of Tradfri GU10s to go with my existing Hue kit about 6 years ago, and they’ve only just started failing (as have the second hand Hue lamps I bought before that).

Continued thread

I read a forum post that suggested the overnight automatic firmware update from the Hue hub may be the problem, but disabling this hasn’t improved matters at all.

I’m desperate for a solution, as this has effectively broken my smart lighting setup. I can’t afford to replace all the Tradfri bulbs with Hue, but am considering ditching the Hue hub and the last few Hue bulbs I have (unless they can be connected to a Tradfri hub?)

Bought a load of new #ikea #tradfri #zigbee bulbs yesterday. As with the replacement Tradfri GU10 I bought last month, they pair and work immediately with my Philips #Hue Hub, and are picked up in #Alexa and #homeAssistant via their Hue integrations.

But after a few hours they become unresponsive. A power cycle sorts it immediately, but you have to do it every day.

Older Tradfri bulbs continue to work fine, but there’s some bug in the newer ones (bought in roughly the last 12mos) with Hue hubs

I've got a couple of 1st gen Amazon #Alexa #Echo devices performing excessive #DNS lookups again. None of the other Amazon devices in the house exhibit the same behaviour when using #BBCsounds

They're constantly (every 1.5 seconds or so) looking up "as-hls-uk-live.akamaized.net". It's a CNAME whose A records have a TTL of 20s, and appears to be part of the BBC's streaming infrastructure.

This accounts for ~400 lookups every ten minutes against my pihole, ~90% of which receive cached responses.

So #Amazon is buying #Bee, eh? Well guess I won't have to worry about buying one of those anytime soon. Bee, if you don't know, is an always-on AI "assistant" that's constantly listening to everything you say. That's already a #privacy nightmare. But couple that with Amazon's absolutely horrendous track record for #user privacy and it should be sounding alarm bells across the country, continent, and planet.

Amazon
#Alexa already has a horrible reputation for not only listening to everything that is said around it but also narc'ing people out and calling the cops on them too.

The
#SurveillanceState is bad enough and Amazon is at the forefront.

No fucking way Amazon. No fucking way. And if I catch anyone near me using one of those things I'm going to rip the damn thing off their body and stomp on it and destroy it. I do not need my personal or public conversations stored and recorded by Amazon. For any reason.
