Jason Rush<p>Finished Stephen Graham Jones's "The Buffalo Hunter Hunter" tonight. I always respect and admire Jones's stuff, but it's usually a bit too literary for me, and I have trouble connecting. Not the case with this one. I found the voice to be super immersive and engaging and got totally lost in the story. Highly recommended.</p><p><a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/amreading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amreading</span></a> <a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/amreadinghorror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amreadinghorror</span></a> <a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a></p>
Jason Rush<p>I've been on a kick to reread some favorite novels. Just finished Head Full of Ghosts, by Paul Tremblay. It was maybe even more amazing on the second read. It's all very ambiguous, and my interpretation of what *actually* happened was the opposite of my last read. Pretty great book if you haven't read it ❤️</p><p><a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/amreading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amreading</span></a> <a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/amreadinghorror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amreadinghorror</span></a> <a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/horrorbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horrorbooks</span></a> <a href="https://social.horrorhub.club/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a></p>
Allan Dyen-Shapiro<p>"Belladonna" by Cressida Blake Roe operates on two levels. On the surface, a time-traveling botanist finds a young protégé with unique abilities. Deeper, it's a story about grooming and psychological abuse of girls. Gritty horror. Allan Dyen-Shapiro<p>More catching up on Codex 2024 reading, P.H. Jason Rush<p>Finished "Our Share of Night" by Mariana Enríquez. A REALLY cool story, but told in a way I had trouble engaging with. Lots of telling instead of showing. Huge flashbacks. The pacing felt off. Deep-dives into the state of Argentinian culture rather than focusing on the huge things in the story. When real scenework happened, it was great, but that was too sporadic.</p><p>Beautifully written, and my complaints are subjective. YMMV. RichardNevell<p>For spooky season, I got round to a book I've been meaning to read since it came out in February. 'Someone Is Watching You' is brilliantly written, and I was fully invested in the lead character and what she was going through <a href="https://www.hachette.co.uk/titles/tess-james-mackey/someone-is-watching-you/9781444967906/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">hachette.co.uk/titles/tess-jam</span><span class="invisible">es-mackey/someone-is-watching-you/9781444967906/</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/halloweenreads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>halloweenreads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/amreading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amreading</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/amreadinghorror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amreadinghorror</span></a></p>
Weebdeluxe<p>Finished "Silver Nitrate" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia yesterday. While the last third is quite a pageturner, I am a bit disappointed overall.</p><p>In terms of pacing, it's a very uneven book with loads of (interesting) exposition. I loved all the background info on mexican cinema and the two main protagonists were a lot of fun. The developing romance was enticing enough, but the B-movie charme of the plot only works for the first two thirds, at least for me.</p><p>Still, I preferred this to "The Daughter of Doctor Moreau". Still not as good as Mexican Gothic.</p><p><a href="https://urusai.social/tags/amreading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amreading</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/amreadinghorror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amreadinghorror</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>

Allan Dyen-Shapiro<p>Stoker-winning horror writer from my neck of the woods, Owl Goingback, has a new book out. I've liked everything I've read from him, and he's a very cool person to hang out with at cons. If a fusing of traditional horror with own voices Native American lore appeals to you, check out his latest. Only $4.99 for the Kindle version. </p><p><a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/AmReadingHorror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmReadingHorror</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/WritingCommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WritingCommunity</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/WritersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WritersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/AuthorsOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AuthorsOfMastodon</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Evil-Whispers-Owl-Goingback-ebook/dp/B0C3W3Q1TS/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=13UZLWNHEBFNK&amp;keywords=owl%20goingback&amp;qid=1685138029&amp;sprefix=owl%20goingback%2Caps%2C1747&amp;sr=8-3&amp;fbclid=IwAR04uHwSjSqBuNPHxSGcCnq8aXEiC5co1bTZiRypaw6xp6JOVLBRBnMyKh0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">amazon.com/Evil-Whispers-Owl-G</span><span class="invisible">oingback-ebook/dp/B0C3W3Q1TS/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=13UZLWNHEBFNK&amp;keywords=owl%20goingback&amp;qid=1685138029&amp;sprefix=owl%20goingback%2Caps%2C1747&amp;sr=8-3&amp;fbclid=IwAR04uHwSjSqBuNPHxSGcCnq8aXEiC5co1bTZiRypaw6xp6JOVLBRBnMyKh0</span></a></p>
