Francois Dion<p>Being polyglot in programming languages back in the early days of personal computing was pretty much a given. Especially on the Apple ][. DOS shell, then Prodos, Pascal, FORTRAN, Logo, assembler (and monitor ROM routines) and of course Basic, in a few flavors, from woz Integer Basic, Applesoft Basic to Beagle Bros Basic. And compilers.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/appril2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>appril2</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/appleII" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>appleII</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/applesoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>applesoft</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/basic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>basic</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/monitor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>monitor</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/BeagleBros" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BeagleBros</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Fortran" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fortran</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Pascal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Pascal</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/assembler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>assembler</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/logo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>logo</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/dos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/prodos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>prodos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/polyglot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>polyglot</span></a></p>
Francois Dion<p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@spike" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>spike</span></a></span> I wanted to do some sort of game. My assembly language math functions used two 8 bit values as input, x and y, and returned an 8 bit value. I also had a quadrant, so that gave me 512 x 512 maps, per functions. I started on that game but never went far. Still mat-monde was a cool toy in itself.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/appleII" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>appleII</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/appleIIgs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>appleIIgs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/applesoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>applesoft</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/basic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>basic</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/assembler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>assembler</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/1980s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>1980s</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/8bit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>8bit</span></a> #6502 <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a></p>
Francois Dion<p>Output of an applesoft program I wrote in the 80s. It was called mat-monde, a play on mappemonde which means "world map" in French. The program made "maps" of strange landscapes, based on math functions.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/appleII" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>appleII</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/applesoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>applesoft</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/software" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>software</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/generativeart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>generativeart</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/math" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>math</span></a></p>
Dan Morgan<p>I’ve seen some vintage Apple pictures on here and I just felt compelled to say playing with Beagle Bros software and anything connected to their branding and aesthetic brings back immense feelings of whimsy and joy. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AppleSoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AppleSoft</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/VintageApple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VintageApple</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/appleiie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>appleiie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BeagleBros" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BeagleBros</span></a></p>
Eric's Edge<p>Okay - here's the deal.</p><p>The <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> II <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/Pascal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Pascal</span></a> experiment was a bust. I can't get the compiler to work with multiple file source code which seriously limits programming. I want to translate the adventure game from the book I'm using (see prior posts) into other languages and machines AND I want to start with the Apple II. So, I'm going to learn #6502 <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/Assembly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Assembly</span></a>. "But wait!", you say. "Why not go to <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/AppleSoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AppleSoft</span></a> <a href="https://bitbang.social/tags/BASIC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BASIC</span></a> first?" Well, because I've never worked in an assembler and now I have a reason!</p>
