Spent a bit of time today working on the #openorb #asteroid orbit computation software (github.com/oorb/oorb).. good times. Might be time for a new version release very soon. Also turns out the software's #python bindings' build process is broken for something to do with some software updates outside oorb itself.. don't know how to fix, so if you know #python and want to help, hit me up!

Multi-target space mission scenarios such as asteroid rendezvous, debris removal or satellite servicing, require targeting several orbits in a single mission, often to be selected among a large set, and therefore choosing optimal sequences of these orbits to be visited. This paper demonstrates a reinforcement-learning-based framework for selecting the sequence of targets to be visited in large-scale multitarget mission optimisation problems. The sequence selection is a NP-hard combinatorial optimisation problem. The proposed method builds upon a neural network architecture for combinatorial optimisation originally developed for Euclidean problems, to produce estimates of the optimal sequence of targets in very short amounts of time. The neural network is trained using a policy-gradient reinforcement-learning approach. Once training is complete, the network can be evaluated in two ways: one of these (greedy decoding) produces solutions on average 15% less optimal than Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO); the other (stochastic search) is on average 5% less optimal than ACO, using an iterative process that is slower than greedy decoding but still orders of magnitude faster than ACO. The quality of the network’s solutions is shown both averaged over large amounts of problems, and demonstrated more closely on a few specific instances.

For a long time scientists have thought that Vesta one of the largest objects in our asteroid belt was an asteroid. Then they decided that actually it was more like a planet with a crust, mantle and core. But now they have discovered that it doesn't actually have a core and so actually it is... in need of further research. It may be that it was the beginning of an early planet or it is a piece of a growing planet.

Die #Nasa-Raumsonde #Lucy ist auf ihrem langen Weg zu den Jupiter-Trojaner am Ostersonntag in einer Entfernung von etwa 960 km an dem Asteroiden #Donaldjohanson im Asteroidengürtel vorbei geflogen.
Donaldjohanson ist etwa 8 km lang und 3,5 km breit und ein Kontakt-Binärkörper. Dass heißt, dass der Asteroid aus zwei verschiedenen Körpern besteht, die sich zu einem verbunden haben.
