The glider fuselage paint job has been scraped to remove drips and runs, and also to cut off the top of all the orange peel bumps that cover the entire surface.

I had to experiment with making a scraper tool. It required constant sharpening.

I have transitioned to wet sanding with a dual action polisher to remove the rest of the orange peel, but I had to experiment a bit to get a process and system. That's because I can't see the progress of sanding of a white surface that's covered with sanding water sludge. I will probably draw a grid of lines over the fuselage that allow me to monitor progress.

The final photo shows light at a glancing angle across a sanded test patch (fuselage belly...I don't mind screwing up here). I see no signs of orange peel, or larger ripples/waviness.

I think I can transition from this sanding job directly to rubbing and polishing compound.

"US FAA extends program allowing Boeing to conduct agency tasks like inspections" by @Reuters - #Boeing gets renewed approval to have its own inspectors conduct aircraft inspections that FAA does not have staff to do. Boeing has been under tight scrutiny since 2018-19 MAX crashes and 2024 MAX door blowout. FAA says Boeing internal processes showed improvement. But the renewal remains less than the usual 5 years. reuters.com/business/autos-tra #aviation #business #regulation #travel #avgeek

Set up for the GPS/RNP approach into Camden. Lowest safe altitude out here is 5400 feet. I have the PFD in split screen with the approach plate on the right hand side. MFD is showing the overview map with my intended flight plan plotted on it.

Autopilot is in NAV mode and holding altitude until waypoint SC2WC, where I arm approach mode and let it descend on the glide path. The approach has been loaded and activated on the FMS (Garmin GTN650Xi) near the bottom right of the shot.

Camden ATIS and Tower frequencies are loaded in COM2 and COM1 standby slots so they’re ready for the handoff from Sydney Centre.. #avgeek

Also:

This is what an ICAO flight plan looks like.

There was an era when they could be submitted via TELEX and you’d format them exactly like this.

Now you use an online form for manual data entry, or an iPad app to do it graphically.

Apparently the TELEX version still works, if you write it out and send it by fax. Not doing that though :) #avgeek

Next weekend: Off to Temora YTEM bright and early on Saturday to spend the long weekend practicing for the now-canceled Pacific Airshow. We’ll perform somewhere else, so the fact that the show is off doesn’t mean we stop.

Then on the Wednesday of that week, weather permitting: Finally do my night flight review so I’m night-legal again. In Australia, day and night flying is licensed/endorsed/reviewed separately. I did my day flight review in Feb but the weather wasn’t conducive to night flight, so I’m catching up now. #avgeek

IFR approach currency and proficiency.

Bankstown Nine departure from runway 29C on climb to 3000. Vectors to the ILS-Z runway 28 at Richmond Air Force Base, published missed approach. Cleared to CN2WC to start the Camden RNP-W. Published missed approach, broke off before CN2WH and tracked visually at 2000 to TWRN for a visual approach on 11L back at Bankstown.

At first I hesitated over this because I thought it must be a hoax, too absurd to be true.

Louisiana state House of Representatives has voted 58-32 to pass SB46 to ban chemtrails and register reports of violations with the Louisiana Air National Guard.

Video of this afternoon's green/unpainted Boeing 737 MAX8 arrival at Portland Airport #KPDX Runway 28L for painting. When we see these, it's usually the first-ever flight of that aircraft out of the Renton WA factory. The painted rudder leads me to think this is going to SCAT Airlines of Kazakhstan. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

Here's today's game of "Name that livery", which we all try to figure out the customer based on a painted rudder on an otherwise-unpainted plane. This is a Boeing 737 MAX8. It landed at Portland #KPDX Runway 28L since that's closest to the Boeing paint hangar. This one appears to me to be for SCAT Airlines of Kazakhstan. We'll know for sure if someone catches it on the way out of painting in some days. #aviation #avgeek #PNW
