Stahleck Castle is a hilltop castle in the Middle Rhine Valley above Bacharach in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Mainz-Bingen. It was probably built at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century and was owned by the famous Wittelsbach dynasty of high nobility from the beginning of the 13th century until the beginning of the 19th century.
From 1925 until today it has been a youth hostel.

The first part of the church in Bacharach on the Middle Rhine (Rhineland-Palatinate), later called the Werner Chapel, was completed as early as 1293, but the church was not finished until after 1426. The church was badly damaged during the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689 and remained a ruin afterwards.
Werner von Oberwesel (or von Bacharach -1271-1287) was a day labourer. His unexplained death was blamed on Jews in the sense of the ritual murder legend and thus led to a bloody persecution of Jews on the Middle Rhine. Werner was venerated as a Catholic saint and the chapel became a popular place of pilgrimage.
