When we woke up this morning, Randy told me that something seriously spooked the cats around 3:45 am. He said that Ozzy, Kelly, and Tuxita thundered to the back end of the house. Randy got up to check it out. Ozzy’s eyes were enormous, he said. He couldn’t find anything obviously wrong, except there was no sign of Obi and Obi’s bed on the porch was askew. I slept through the whole thing.

I went looking for Obi first thing this morning to make sure he was all right and he was. As soon as I looked into the backyard, I knew what had happened.

We’ve been lax and haven’t been bringing in the birdfeeder at night. What I saw was the metal pole bent all the way over to the ground and the birdfeeder taken completely apart. Ceramic water dish shattered from the fall. Big claw marks in the plastic tube of the feeder.

IOW, a bear had a picnic. Only a bear could have done this kind of damage. We’re on a route that we know bears use, so we should have known better. We won’t be doing that again.

As luck would have it, we had a second birdfeeder pole. The first pole came with a plastic water pan that cracked quickly in the weather. I contacted the company to buy a replacement, but they wanted so much for a shitty plastic pan that it was cheaper to simply buy another entire pole set. We eventually replaced the plastic pan with a ceramic bowl that the small birds like a lot.

So by the time we had breakfast, Randy had put up the new pole and managed to get the birdfeeder back together well enough to do for now. We’re shopping for a new birdfeeder to replace it. We loved the one we had, but typically the company is no longer making that model.

Meanwhile, no more feeding the bears. Bad on us.
