#Movies

I just finished watching #TheSubstance starring #DemiMoore for which she already has received a #GoldenGlobe for #BestActress in a #Musical or Comedy.

The #movie is truly #BIZZARE!!!! 😲

I initially thought it was intended as a #horror show but then it morphed into a #farce which had me laughing out loud at the ridiculousness if it. 🤣

It's #TheLastShowGirl (2024) meets #TheThing (1982) and the underlying question is: What price are you willing to pay for fame & beauty?" 🤔

I've now watched 8 out of the 10 #Oscar nominated films for #BestPicture this year and so far & The Substance is my favorite for the craziness & audacity of it all. 👏👏👏👏

I'd give it at least a 7 and maybe even an 8 out of 10 -- so call it a 7.5 which is a very high movie rating from me.

I know it won't win the Oscar -- #TheBrutalist which already won the Golden Globe for Best Picture will probably get it -- but IMO this film is better & I'm immediately adding it to my DVD buy list. 😎

#Oscars #Movies

Well, this year's Oscar ceremonies are over and there were was only 1 surprise for me when . . .

Emma Stone won for #BestActress in "Poor Things" over Lily Gladstone in "Killers of the Flower Moon" who I thought would win because she would have been the 1st Native American to win an Oscar and because dramatic performances usually win over comedic/farcical ones but it was not to be.

Otherwise, the awards played to script with "Oppenheimer" sweeping the awards for #BestPicture, #BestDirector, #BestActor (Cillian Murphy) & #BestSupportingActor (Robert Downey Jr.) plus 3 other technical categories.

The remaining winner in the major categories was Da'Vine Joy Randolph who won (as I expected) for #BestSupportingActress for her role in "The Holdovers,"

Now, as a new film season begins, I can go about watching the rest of the nominated movies & performances of 2023 that I haven't seen yet in: "American Fiction," "Zone of Interest," "Rustin" & "The Color Purple."

Just finished watching "Poor Things" (2023).

It's a bizarre film that I found difficult to watch all the way through (indeed, I skipped back & forth over various parts). I'm still trying to make sense of it but have serious doubts that I ever will. I'm hoping that a later reading of a description of the plot and some independent reviews will help me understand it better but it is as befuddling as Barbie was (but obviously for different reasons).

Suffice to say, I'm somewhat surprised that it is listed among the nominees for #BestPicture at the Oscars this evening and, although I can see why Emma Stone is being considered for #BestActress for her performance in the film, I do not consider her performance the best of the 5 actresses up for the award this evening, all of which I have now seen.

Stone won the #Grammy for Best Actress in a Comedy and Lily Gladstone won the Grammy for Best Actress in a Drama but I still think Gladstone will take the Oscar this evening. We'll see . . .

Apparently I've got water on my mind & watched another nautically themed movie today . . . "Nyad" (2023), a biopic that documented Diana Nyad's attempts & ultimate success in swimming the 103 miles from Cuba to Key West in 20123 at age 64.

Annette Benning does an excellent job of portraying the driven (as well as insufferable & emotionally exhausting) Nyad in pursuit of her dream of swimming from Cuba to FL and Jodie Foster does an equally excellent job in portraying the woman who loves & supports her in this effort.

I still think Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Flower Moon") will win the #Oscar for #BestActress but, in terms of their performances, I think that Benning & Carey Mulligen ("Maestro") were better.

I also still think that "Da'Vine Joy Randolph ("Holdovers") will win the Oscar for #BestSupportingActress which IMO was better than Emily Blunt's in "Oppenheimer" but not as good as Foster's in "Nyad."

We'll see . . . 🤷‍♂️

Just streamed "Maestro" (2023), Bradley Cooper's movie about Leonard Bernstein, which I liked. Cooper does a great job of embodying Lenny but I was more impressed with Carey Mulligan's portrayal of his wife, Felicia Montealgre.

I've so far seen 6 of the 10 movies nominated for the #Oscar for #BestPicture this year and, of those that I've seen, I think Mulligan deserves the nod for #BestActress although my guess is that Lily Gladstone in "Killers of the Flower Moon" will take that award over Emma Stone in "Poor Things", who both won a #Grammy for Best Actress in different categories -- drama/comedy.

As for #BestActor, Cooper's performance certainly deserves a nod as does Paul Giamatti in "The Holdovers" but Cillian Murphy will probably take it for his role in #Oppenheimer, which will also probably take the awards for #BestPicture & #BestDirector as he/it did @ the Grammys.

We'll see . . .

Directed by #GeorgeStevens and often aired on #TCM, #RKO's #IRememberMama is the 1948 #movie version of #JohnVanDruten's hit #Broadway #play.

👏👏💐”Michelle #Yeoh has become only the second woman of colour to win the #bestactress #Oscar following in the footsteps of Halle Berry back in 2002. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight this is a beacon of hope and possibility,” she said, before adding: “Ladies don’t ever let anyone tell you you are past your prime.”
