And #biophilia played a role in thinking about green buildings, health and productivity. It turns out that workers and students with views of the outside world are healthier and more productive. Makes one wonder why some housing proposals for below market rate #housing include reducing the views of the outside.

And for skeptics - have you ever experienced feeling better after walking in a park? Working in a garden?

“Biophilia” (2011) is Björk’s seventh album (youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK). It was conceived as a meditation on the intersection of nature and technology using concepts of musicology culminating in a multimedia project that involved live performance, visual art/gallery exhibitions and educational workshops on 4 different continents. Camley Street #raingardens - around 1.2m width of planting in terraced raingarden cells on a sloping road with capacity to manage the 1 in 30 rainfall event. Check out the 'before' shot too for comparison., at the end.
The project took 1m width from both the highway and the wide footway to create this 130m long connected set of raingardens.
The raingardens use a bioretention build-up and are reasonably deep in places to accommodate the tree planting: sweet buckeye and European hop hornbeam.
Weirs over the soil surface allow level soil to be formed on the sloping site with storage capacity over the surface to a depth of 100mm to create enough space to catch intense rainfall events and give it time to percolate through the raingarden soils where additional volume can be stored in the void space. if i ever start to think "wow i'm strong and can do so many things!", i'll just take a look at this red fire ant hauling away a dead mosquito that's multiple times its size.

seeing stuff like this helps keep me humble. it reminds me that whatever "tough work" i might do, tiny animals are outdoing me every day on the "heavy lifting" front.

every day, ants are doing remarkable feats of heavy lifting to bring home the (mosquito) bacon. relative to my own body size, i've certainly never hauled home a food that big!

(when i saw this scene, at first i thought it was a *team* of ants hauling it away...because i've seen them cooperate on moving things as large as a piece of cat kibble! like 15 of them had to cooperate on that job. cat kibble is a big prize for ants: it's a nugget of dense calories that they take apart bit by bit)

this is why i think of ants as the cleaners of the forest floor. if you drop ANYTHING organic & edible on the floor, they WILL haul it away. bit by bit. they keep the floor clean.)
