Advice from the #CFPB helped me to beat a bad debt that wasn't mine in court (I was my own lawyer). Armed with pertinent questions for the debt owner, I was able to prove that it wasn't my debt. But I wouldn't have been able to do it without that information (not without hiring a lawyer, which could end up costing more than the debt)!

Workers at the CFPB watch hopelessly as the GOP undoes their work

NEW YORK (AP) — "The lights are on at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau across the street from the White House, and employees still get paid. But, in practice, the bureau has been mostly inoperable for nearly six months. CFPB employees say they essentially spend the workday sitting on their hands, forbidden from doing any work by directive from the White House.

"The bureau is supposed to be helping oversee the nation’s banks and financial services companies and taking enforcement action in case of #wrongdoing. Instead, the situation is Kafkaesque: the main function seems to be undoing the #rulemaking and law enforcement work that was done under previous administrations, including in President Donald Trump’s first term.

"American consumers can no longer look to the bureau for help when it comes to their checking account, credit card, #PaydayLoan, auto loan or #mortgage. Trump has neutered the watchdog, employees say, the culmination of a yearslong effort by Republicans who felt the agency often went overboard in its efforts."

AP News · Workers at the CFPB watch hopelessly as the GOP undoes their workOnce a powerful watchdog for financial wrongdoing, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has seen its enforcement efforts grind to a halt under the Trump administration. Employees report being unable to perform their duties, and investigations into financial misconduct are being undone. Financial institutions like Navy Federal Credit Union and Toyota Financial have had penalties rescinded, leaving harmed customers without restitution. The new budget law passed by Congress earlier this month cuts the CFPB’s funding by roughly half, meaning the bureau will be forced into mass layoffs.

The CFPB's ~1,500 staffers: locked out of their offices & agency computers, while ATTYs & judges deliberate over the degree to which Trump’s wrecking crew is legally allowed to kill it.

employees highlighted the dire situation -which has helped secure $21B in relief for Ms of wronged consumers since its 2011 inception.

Practically the only ppl at the CFPB doing anything are the ones working to🚨drop prior enforcement actions & CXL proposed rules.

The American Prospect · Hardly Workin’The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is on life support, and consumer scam complaints are surging as a result. The Trump administration wants to pull the plug.

"Trump promised to lower costs. Instead,🚨he gutted the consumer watchdog agency & helped big banks rip off Americans by an added $18B in fees & unchecked rip-offs.

Trump’s Gangster St serves anyone who can line his pockets & sticks it to the people."

The increased consumer costs from the CFPB's rollback of #regulations on #BankFees, wholesale dismissal of cases against #banks & other #lenders & the failure to disburse funds for harmed #borrowers run counter to Trump's pledges to ease the cost of living, acc/to #Student Borrower Protection Center & #Consumer Federation of America.

Since #Trump took control of the #CFPB in Feb, calling for its elimination, admin ofcls have sought to reduce the workforce by about 90% & curtail its oversight.

"#Musk immediately attacked USAID, which accounts for all of one half of one percent of the budget, and is tasked with providing the impoverished with food and water and services like HIV prevention. But USAID was investigating Starlink, and so it was gutted. He went after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which exists only to protect consumers from predatory financial institutions and has returned $21 billion to those who’ve been defrauded. But the CFPB was fielding over 300 complains about Tesla and would’ve had oversight into X’s payment processing, and so it was gutted. In fact, every single agency that Elon went after - #USAID, #CFPB, #DOL, #NLRB, #EPA, #DOT, #USDA - just so happened to be performing oversight into him or #SpaceX or #Starlink or #Tesla. And all of those agencies paid the price."
