Flipboard News Desk
Amid turmoil over tariffs and the relationship with the United States, Canada is facing challenges from within. Conservative Danielle Smith, the premier of Alberta, says she will hold a referendum on provincial separation in 2026 if citizens gather the required signatures on a petition. While Smith says she isn't herself supportive of Albertan separation, her government last week introduced legislation making it easier for a referendum to happen. In her address, Smith claimed that Liberal rule has turned Canada into an international laughing stock. First Nations leaders have spoken out against the separation movement, saying Alberta doesn't have the authority to negate treaties that predate the province. Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:
I would not have made the trip to Washington if I was Carney. This reaks of a setup. He could've opened negotiations from Canada. Now he looks like he's rushed off to kiss the ring right after winning the election. I hope I'm wrong but I sense danger. #ElbowsUp #canadianpolitics

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:
There is absolutely no doubt that the premier of Alberta intentionally timed her statement for Mark Carneys trip to Washington. His absence prevents a proper response but also perhaps more importantly to her benifactors leaves Carney vulnerable and off balance for his meeting with Trump. #ElbowsUp #canadianpolitics

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:
Someone needs to tell Danielle Smith that seperation requires a higher bar than 10,000 signatures on a petition. First you call a provincial election and run specifically stating your intention to hold a referendum. If you clear that bar you hold a referendum with a clear and very specific question on the ballot. Her latest statements and thinly veiled intentions are highly irresponsible and Dubious in motivation. #ElbowsUp #canadianpolitics

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:
🇨🇦 If you wanted to destabilize a neighboring country using active measures it might look like this:

🔥 Infiltrate a national party and foment fake grievances.

🔥 Attack and destabilize the economy.

🔥 Foster a regional separatist movement to build a wedge in the federation.

It looks like the first two have failed and now Daniel Smith is being used to execute the last of these strategies. I'll relish the day she faces justice. #ElbowsUp #CanadianPolitics

Flipboard News Desk
Were you worried about the political future of Canadian Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who was ousted in the federal election on Monday (fun fact: his former riding, Carleton in Ottawa, had the highest turnout in Ontario, at 81.57%)? Wipe your brow, because Alberta Conservative MP Damien Kurek has agreed to step down to force a by-election in his riding of Battle River-Crowfoot. Kurek has held the seat since 2019 and was re-elected on Monday with almost 82% of the vote.
