Buying carbon credits to fight climate change? Here’s what to know

#CarbonCredits sold on the voluntary market are under scrutiny for not offsetting #Greenhouse#Gas emissions as claimed.

One investigation concluded that over 90 percent of carbon credits issued for #rainforest protection by the largest carbon credit certification body “had no benefit to the climate.” Two reports published in 2023 found that credits for forest-based projects in North America, South America, Africa and Asia may in fact #increase net #emissions

New Zealand taxpayers support the country's biggest polluters to the tune of six hundred million dollars each year. We give these in carbon credits to the likes of Methanex, Rio Tinto and NZ Steel.

These companies have no incentive to decrease their pollution as long as kiwis keep gifting them money. Thankfully the Climate Change Commission supports ending the free carbon credit grift for big polluters.

Looks like EU electric car makers may need to buy carbon credits from Chinese firms exporting electric cars to the EU;

if, EU firms use the 'pooled' carbon credit system, to try to avoid the fines the EU levels on emissions, the most numerous credits on offer have been allocated to Chinese firms whose EVs are (relatively) cleaner than EU manufacturers hybrids & semi-electric cars.

Looks like giving the Chinese another income line in their competition with EU car firms!

"I started studying carbon offsets 20 years ago studying problems with protocols and programs. Here I am, 20 years later having the same conversation. We need an alternative process. The offset market is broken."
