‘The carer’s allowance scandal – because of which 144,000 carers are repaying more than £251m – continues to claim victims and will do so for the immediate future as the DWP works its way through thousands of backlogged overpayments.’

“In any sort of ethical world, this would not happen.”

The #DWP ignored whistleblowers and continued to fine and prosecute #carers.

The Guardian · ‘Something has gone very wrong’: how the carers scandal was exposedBy Patrick Butler

Overpayments of carer's allowance (paid over months) that the DWP tries to claw back as lump sums, seem to have been running at over £50m a year for the last six years & its largely the DWP's fault for letting overpayments continue for too long even when they'd been notified that payments should have been stopped.

As always its a tale of badly used technology & staff cuts, but carers lives have been made miserable because the DWP couldn't do its job properly!

The Guardian · At least £357m in carer’s allowance paid out in error over past six years, charity findsBy Patrick Butler

So the DWP have been at it again, stopping carers' allowance earlier than mandated when a serious ill child was in hospital for just over two weeks.

Indeed, the fact that all payments are intended to halt after a month of hospitalisation on the grounds the carers' role has been taken up by the NHS also flies in the face of what we know about the overstretched NHS.

Its time to take unpaid carers' role seriously & stop sh*tting on them from above!

Provide habitat and fund wildlife hospitals!

"The WA Wildlife Hospital has seen a 17 per cent year-on-year increase in patient admissions over the past 15 years."
Reasons?
"These include increasing urban sprawl, with suburbs encroaching on natural habitats as the population grows, and attacks from introduced predators such as wandering cats, foxes and dogs."

Excellent news:

'Andrea Tucker has overturned the demand for £4,600 in carer’s allowance overpayments for alleged breaches in benefit rules'.

Tucker's tribunal case vindicates her claim the DWP misled her & abused her through a miscalculation of her working hours, which triggered a demand for a repayment of carers' allowance.

Now, the DWP needs to be brought under control & its abuse of unpaid carers halted...
