Not something we expected to see while driving along.

A massive tree with rough bark and bare limbs stands grey against the blue sky and distant snow capped mountains. On a thick broken branch, two Canada geese stand up in the tree. Their brown feathers and black neck, with the white patch under their cheek, bright in the sunlight.

I was so excited to finally see a wood duck after a year that I had a hard time holding the camera still. LOL

A male wood duck slowly moved through the shallow water of the flooded pasture. Tufts of green grass extend up above the blue water. The colorful duck looks down through the water in search of food. His bright green head with sharp white lines surround a ruby red eye and orange bill. The dark brown chest blends into the black back, while a black and white stripe separate the chest from the light tan sides.

Drove around this afternoon hoping to see the eagle again. Thankfully we did and it was closer to the road.

Suffering from "just need a little bit more zoom" yearning since these trees are just a little too far out there.

Liftoff! A single bald eagle has taken off from the bare cottonwood branch, it's bright white tail flared and dark wings outstretched and raised upward. Its white head is facing towards the left, yellow beak barely visible against the snow covered hill in the background. The large yellow talons are hanging down, toes spread as they had just released from the branch.

A bald eagle perched in the most inconvenient place from my point of view (behind a thick bark covered branch with only its white head, half of the dark body, and white tail showing above and below the branch). However, just to the right of the eagle, a black-billed magpie has chosen to land on the branch. Its white and iridescent blue wings spread outward, dark black back in between, and long tail flared as it comes in for the touchdown.

While looking at the Canada geese on the golf course, I noticed two different birds moving along with them. I took several photos since I didn't recognize them and let both Merlin and iNat have a crack at it. Both apps gave me a Greater White-fronted Goose. If so, that's a lifer for me!!

A small brown goose moves across the short dull green grass of a golf course, it's head lowered as the orange bill scrapes across the ground while it grazes. Thick orange legs hold the small body up. The brown back and white undertail are visible, as well as a white stripe across it's side.

Driving by the golf course saw there was white birds mixed in with all the Canada Geese. Pulled over, but couldn't quite get a good photo of them. Came back later, asked the Pro Shop guy if I could go out there and he gave me the key to a cart (!). So, I got some nice close up shots of snow geese.

Two of the birds are a marbled brown and white as they morph into their adult colors, one watching the background, the other with its head lowered to graze. The final bird is a dark brown with a white face and orange bill, grazing on the grass. All show the tell tale dark mark on the side of the bill that resembles a curled lip.

Three Snow Geese graze on the short dull green grass of the golf course. Two in the background are solid white with a black tipped wing sticking out near their tail. The third is centered in the image, its body dark brown and its face white with a brown stripe over its head. The dark mark on the side of the orange bill that resembles a curled lip is visible on the closest goose.

A group of 11 snow geese and one Canada goose walk across the short dull green grass of the golf course. Most of the birds are solid white with short orange bills, with two having a molting brown and white body as they grow into their adult color. The Canada goose stands out with its black neck and head with a white cheek mark and a brown body. Two of the white geese have smaller bodies and bills than the others.

A group of 9 snow geese and 9 Canada geese move across the short dull green grass of a golf course, some walking with their heads up, others grazing as they move. The snow geese are all solid white, with one (one is molting from a juvenile to adult colors) while the Canada geese are dark brown with black necks and heads that have a white cheek mark going under their chin. Two of the snow geese are looking back towards the camera.

Giant spider sculpture, build out of a VW beetle body + legs, on US 50; West of Carson City, on the way to Virginia City.
I was here last summer and took a picture that came out with some weird artifacts--it was a *really* hot day in the desert, and some of the markings on the paper backing came through on the film. I think it was due to light leaking in through the little round red-glass window where you see the film counter. Not only was there a *lot* of sunlight that day, but I wasn't in the habit of keeping the camera in a bag, so there was a lot of time for light to be sneaking in.

Went up the mountains this time for a sunset photo session with #comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS)

A few of the new murals that are around Carson City thanks to the second annual Music & Murals Festival.

The wall of the Western Nevada Performing Arts Center is painted teal, with a large face of a person wearing a brown cowboy style hat and long pink hair. Over their face is a yellow-orange mountain lion jumping in the opposite direction, the line of its back leg aligning with the nose of the person. on either side of the face and mountain lion are multicolored flowers that appear to be spilling their colors down to the parking lot below.

A red car is parked in front, forcing the view to be at an angle. Clear blue sky is above and the sunlight is shining intensely onto the fresh paint.

A long mural resembling the geometric designs of Central America, with three running horses on either end (the right side cut off in the image), the outside one a pale tan, the center one orange, and the inside one black. Each have a plant like design on them and a contrasting color for their shaded bellies. In the center of the mural are two large upside down rainbows, with a large yellow water drop in the middle. The colors are black, tan, orange, blue, and white. Between them is a green stretched six-legged crocodile, with it's head and tail lifted. Pink and blue clouds are above the animal. Around the edge of the image is a row of colored squares with different colored circles in the middle.

The mural is on the west wall and, due to the timing of the visit, is in shadow from the morning sun. The picture is taken at an angle to avoid the sunlight shining on the lens.

A row of teal and white wolves/coyotes (due to the photographer's handle, we're going with wolves), with bright yellow flowers from blooming cacti between them. The background is black, and where the light shines on their fur, their colors are white and tan, with the shaded portions of their heads in blue and teal shades. Low green bushes growing near the bottom of the wall obscure some parts of the image from this angle.

A large red moon hangs over a flowery meadow with large snow capped mountains on either side and fluffy pink clouds in the distance. Standing in the meadow, beside a space helmet set on the ground, is a large brown dog, facing towards the moon. Green trees surround the meadow and blue flying fish swim in the air above the dog.

The artist cleverly used the upper roof to give more size to the moon, the image is taken so the two portions align correctly.

On one hand, OMG my Dad has Mountain Chickadees in his yard!! He doesn't get mountain chickadees!!

For #SchiffsSamstag today, taken as we were leaving Dubrovnik last year, this is the USNS Carson City, a Spearhead-class, aluminium catamaran with flight deck and loading ramp, designed for rapid access and delivery of materiel, capable of speeds up to 45 knots.

An overcast day and we're on a ship sailing out of a port, passing a channel between two land masses that are connected by a suspension bridge. Docked alongside the nearest of the land masses on the right of us is a boxy-looking naval vessel in typically grey paintwork with a textured look across it all like corrugated iron. A low bridge sits towards the front, barely jutting over the bulky shape of the ship from this angle. At its rear is a flat area of deck with a flight deck on which to land helicopters. It all looks functional and industrial rather than military.
