MarkG<p>Okay, I got my phone back with the new battery. It works well and the phone looks brand new now. It was looking rather frightening with the swollen battery and the cracked screen protector (since removed -- I'll have to get a new screen protector). Granted, the cost of replacing it was steep ( $120 -- maybe elsewhere I could have gotten it cheaper). Hopefully it lasts. I initially bought the phone two years ago for $200; so, cost wise I figure I'm still pretty good. Anyhow, see picture of the old swollen battery.</p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/cellphones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cellphones</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Toronto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Toronto</span></a></p>
MarkG<p>Well, my phone is pregnant. The battery is swelling.</p><p>I went to a few shops, who said, throw it out and buy a new one. They all let me know of all the great deals I could get, especially if I signed up with so-and-so cellphone plan providers that they were promoting. "Better to end than to mend" they said (okay, no one actually quoted Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, but they should have, IMO). They also added, it's a bomb! Buy a new one now from us!</p><p>Anyway, I did find a repair (and game) shop not connected with or facilitating any of the plans from big providers, that being Gamerama. I put in a purchase of the new battery. It's on order, and Monday when they get the battery I'll take my phone to the shop and hopefully get it fixed (note, I'm typing this on the phone now, and it has not yet exploded).</p><p><a href="https://www.gamerama.ca/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">gamerama.ca/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/cellphones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cellphones</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Toronto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Toronto</span></a></p>
RationizedInsanity🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦🇨🇦🇬🇱🇵🇸<p>There's a really dumb trend that happens with <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/cellphones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cellphones</span></a> particularly with their screens -</p><p>Someone designs a screen glass made of a stronger material that won't crack as easily when dropped.</p><p>Instead of keeping the glass at the same thickness to essentially give us nearly indestructible screens, designers go "OH THAT MEANS WE CAN REDUCE THE WEIGHT A TINY BIT AND SPEND LESS ON MATERIALS BY MAKING THE GLASS THINNER!". </p><p>Also built in obsolescence is a thing.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/humor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>humor</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/design" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>design</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/manufacturing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>manufacturing</span></a></p>
Krutonium://<p>I continue to absolutely disagree with the actions taken by Schools wrt Banning Cellphones.</p><p>They're going to have those for the rest of their lives. In their pockets, ready to use.</p><p>I understand that it's frustrating dealing with cellphone mis-use in the classroom. But removing it as an option isn't a good solution. All you're doing is setting them up for failure. You're setting them up for entering the workforce, and having no idea how to <em>effectively</em> use a cellphone.</p><p>Sounds wild right? They should be using it in their own time and should thus know that right? I disagree. </p><p>Sure, they'll use phones on their own time, but they'll never be taught how to use it productively. They'll never be taught how to balance using a phone for tasks that someone wants them to do.</p><p>Instead of banning phones, schools should be embracing them, building their curriculum to integrate them, offering phones to the students that don't have one.</p><p>It's as short sighted as banning calculators in math class.</p><p>"You won't always have a calculator in your pocket."</p><p><a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>education</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/cellphones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cellphones</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/phone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>phone</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>android</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/iphone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iphone</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/quebec" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>quebec</span></a> <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/duh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>duh</span></a></p>

NNN<p>Bonus round: if the idea of running open-source Android on your phone interests you, check-out GrapheneOS.&nbsp; </p><p>It mostly only runs on the Pixel series, and only while they are still supported by Google, raising costs to the $50/year range.&nbsp; But it is possibly the most secure phone operating system you can use.</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/cellphones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cellphones</span></a></p>
NNN<p>A Pixel 6a (for example) costs $121, can run with Google support for 2 years, then will probably be supported by LineageOS for at-least another 5.&nbsp; This can bring cost down &lt;$25/year... if you can keep your phone in one piece that long!</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/cellphones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cellphones</span></a></p>
NNN<p>Open-source Android software called "LineageOS" can make&nbsp; inexpensive phones last many years (search "lineageOS devices" for compatible models).&nbsp; This also gives monthly security updates, and runs faster without "bloatware."</p><p>Initial install of LineageOS can require running special software to unlock the bootloader. But Pixel phones are unlocked, so are the easiest to install LineageOS on, and are so cheap, there's not much point in buying the older ones.&nbsp;</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
NNN<p>Typical phones get an annual security patch. Our family decided to use phones until 12 months after the last patch (when it would have received a patch, if still supported)</p><p>We search "end-of-life &lt;brand&gt;" &amp; compare yrs vs price on Swappa. IE: a Galaxy A25 5G has 3.5 years support left (so: 4.5 years usable by our standard), and costs $163 or $36/year. A Pixel 6A costs $121 and 4 usable years (=$40/yr)</p><p>We can find supported Android phones &lt;$50/year, or Apple for &lt;$100/yr</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <br><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
NNN<p>Cell phones go out of support too fast, leaving you with the choice between "expensive &amp; wasteful", or "insecure".&nbsp;</p><p>Our family uses two strategies to minimize the cost, with reasonable security: maximizing years of support per-dollar; or using open-source software.</p><p>(1/5)</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/budget" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>budget</span></a> <br><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/CellPhones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CellPhones</span></a></p>
