Wildfire smoke driving PM2.5 levels to over 500 μg/m3 in parts of Canada and the USA weather.gc.ca/firework/firewor

That level is extremely hazardous to health. If you can smell smoke, even if the air looks pretty clear, trust your nose, and if you can clean the air - with an air filter (indoors) or an N95 (indoors and out)!

(This post brought to you by some 🤡 claiming that visibly brown-grey air, an irritated throat, and diffuse, very orange-yellow sunlight were signs of humidity, which might be funny if it weren't literally painful.)

@cdarwin

wearing an N95 :n95: when there's wildfire smoke 🔥💨 cuts between 19/20 and 999/1000 of dangerous PM2.5

fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution released by wildfires is even more toxic [...]

neurotoxic particles [...] including heavy metals [...]

These particles can reach the brain via the olfactory nerve and pass through the blood–brain barrier

And indoors, where PM2.5 from wildfire smoke does still reach, air purifiers are also highly effective!

The Guardian · How wildfire smoke across Canada and the US can affect mental healthBy Adrienne Matei

@dotjayne OMG, the upfront and operating costs to have air filters in workplaces, vs. the lost income from employee sick days - MBAs should be flocking to Corsi-Rosenthal boxes like moths to a flame

but somehow they overlook the extremely quick ROI that ALSO increases org velocity AND improves employee QoL and and and and ...

I can testify to the fact that wildfire smoke is hazardous. The past few days kept me indoors, since I have asthma. On his trip from the grocery store, my man left the back door open while he unloaded the car. That was all it took to trigger an asthma attack, since the AQI was in the red zone.

Emissions (from whatever sources) of PM2.5 affect our hearts and lungs.

We must protect clean air and water, which are necessary for life.

US EPA · Health and Environmental Effects of Particulate Matter (PM) | US EPAParticles less than 10 micrometers in diameter pose the greatest problems, because they can get deep into your lungs, and some may even get into your bloodstream. Fine particles (PM2.5) are the main cause of reduced visibility (haze).
