anlomedad
Regarding the caveat that the most efficient time for #CDR is during CO2 phase-out (and not when fossil CO2 has reached zero):

the logic is a bit more complicated for the weighing: energy used to replace a fossil source vs energy used to remove a ton from the atmosphere.
A ton removed from the atmosphere is 1 full ton. But replacing the fossil source for a ton of emissions isn't 1:1. Half the fossil emissions are taken up by (assumed intact) carbon sinks. So one could argue that #Iceland's renewable energy only needs to replace 50% of the ton that #Climeworks removes from the #atmosphere.

Except: this is only true on paper. In reality, Iceland needs to replace the full fossil ton because half a ton added to ocean and biosphere is still a forcing half-ton of CO2. What goes around comes around – eventually. For example in the outgassing spoken of earlier.

anlomedad
Oh, hang on. I wrote "CDR is most efficient during reduction phase when sinks don't notice it bc then CDR won't lower ppm (but still remove carbon from the atmo)."

Yeah. But it has to be a version of #CDR that doesn't steal renewable energy capacity from the reduction efforts. Like for instance, #Climeworks in Iceland is stealing RE. But at such a remote location that energy export would in itself incur much GHG and energy. I'd assume, RE export from #Iceland would only be as #hydrogen or some other fuel-conversion. H2 loses 70% in production, doesn't it? Does "well -to-wheel" deduct even more or is that already accounted for in the -70%? But that would be the value for H2 as fuel for gas guzzlers which no one in their right mind proposes.

H2 is also used in industrial processes directly in the xxxMt per year range.
So if Iceland were to export green industrial H2 made with the RE that Climeworks uses – would that make a dent? Or is it better to let CW scale up with stolen RE?

anlomedad
Thinking of a theoretical CO2 removal calculation to get back down to 350ppm=1°C by year 2100. Theoretical assumptions: sinks stay as intact as today, fossil CO2 since 350ppm will stop at 1600Gt, permafrost and dried, non-rewettable wetlands add 360. 50% of all of this goes into sinks = 980Gt for removal?
No. Sinks in the net negative emission phase outgas 50% for every ton removed 💡=1470 Gt CO2 for NET by the year 2100, or 400 Gt Carbon. Where the outgassing occurs is shown in the middle row of maps in picture 3. The huge amount of removal best matches the left panel.

Regarding competition with food and biodiversity, I recall from another paper that #BECCS can sustainably remove 3Gt CO2 per year.
