Brent Sleeper<p>The current pool and fountain were constructed in the 1980s. Though <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/ClintonSquare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ClintonSquare</span></a> (and all of downtown <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Syracuse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Syracuse</span></a>) bears deep scars from the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/UrbanRenewal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UrbanRenewal</span></a> movement’s hollowing out of old downtowns and neighboring, historically black neighborhoods in the 1960s and 70s, the plaza today does a remarkable job of evoking the canal's presence, especially in person.</p>

The canal was rerouted in the early twentieth century, and its original course through the city was filled and converted into (the paved) Erie Blvd.</p>
