Portraits of Sir Thomas Gresham and Anne Fernely, Anthonis Mor, c. 1560 - c. 1565
Sir Thomas Gresham (1519–1579) was the leading English merchant in Antwerp and also the English king’s financial agent in the Low Countries. He and his wife, Anne Fernely, are expensively, yet soberly dressed. Their status is also evident in their choice of painter: Anthonis Mor was one of the pre-eminent portraitists of his day and court painter to the Spanish king

Portrait of Magtilda Muilman, Frans van der Mijn, c. 1745 - c. 1747
Wearing a satin skirt and jacket trimmed with ermine tails, Magtilda Muilman gazes out confidently at the viewer. While her husband, Jan Pranger, is portrayed in the adjacent painting in his study overlooking the Elmina slave fort, Muilman finds herself in a more domestic setting, probably in their home on Amsterdam’s Singel Canal. The picture cabinet in the background features a portrait, possibly of one of Muilman’s ancestors.

Maurits, Prince of Orange (1567-1625), Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt, c. 1613 - c. 1620
Prince Maurits was stadholder and military commander of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. He sired eight children with six different mistresses. As he refused to marry he had no legal successor. Maurits stands proud in a ceremonial gilded suit of armour, his helmet and gloves are on the table. This design had been the norm for state portraits since 1551, when it was first devised by the Italian painter Titian.

Is it because I’ve been watching documentaries about some of the artists from the Nouveau Réalisme movement lately that I’ve started appreciating eclectic collections of objects? I’m not sure… All I know is that I now find myself rummaging through my trash cans—and even other people's—to see what I can salvage, picking up little objects I find on the street…
