#Harvard is among the vast majority of public & private #universities & #colleges that are #TaxExempt.

Under the #law, the #IRS initiates investigations based on established criteria & procedures, not based on presidential directives. The IRS is expected to operate independently & without political pressure.

If the IRS found that Harvard’s tax-exempt status should be revoked, Harvard would be given notice & an opportunity to contest the finding in court.

"#Foreignstudents, we have about a million of them in the country right now. They contribute to the #economy if they stay here. There's a lot of Fortune 100 companies that began because of international students. If they become elites in their country, then we have pro-American elites. They also contribute financially to American #colleges and #universities. They're central to the business model."

How to dig your own grave, as a "resistance" group of #universities:

»The signatories come from large state schools, small liberal arts #colleges and Ivy League institutions, including the presidents of #Harvard, #Princeton and #Brown.

In the statement, the university presidents, as well as the leaders of several scholarly societies say they speak with “one voice” and call for “constructive engagement” with the #administration.

“We are open to constructive reform and do not oppose legitimate government oversight,” they write. “However, we must oppose undue government intrusion in the lives of those who learn, live, and work on our campuses.”«

Most private, nonprofit #colleges & #universities are exempt from paying federal income taxes because they are classified as a 501(c)(3) organization with an #educational mission. Universities do pay other taxes, such as payroll taxes for employees.

“No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit & hire, & which areas of study & inquiry they can pursue,” #Harvard President Alan Garber said in his message.
