Let’s place this discussion in context.

Popular culture has been full of behaviors like stalking, violence in response to jealousy, & relationships based on hierarchy (it’s a woman’s job to make him feel good) being represented as ‘romantic’, & contempt for women, especially those who are older or don’t conform to gendered expectations, so ubiquitous that it is our normal. Can’t we take a joke?

In the acculturation of children into heterosexual romantic norms, consent is a fringe concept.

The problem is not social media.

"A federal jury found on Friday that Meta violated the California Invasion of Privacy Act, the state's wiretap law, by collecting data from a period-tracker app without user consent.

Plaintiffs in a class-action case proved by a preponderance of evidence that Meta intentionally eavesdropped on and/or recorded conversations using an electronic device, said a verdict form released yesterday in US District Court for the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs also proved that they had a reasonable expectation of privacy and that Meta did not have consent from all parties to eavesdrop on and/or record the conversations, the jury found."

Lifehacker · How to Make Sure Instagram Isn't Sharing Your Location With All Your FriendsSome users think Instagram's new map feature is blasting their live location to all followers without their consent. It isn't, but that doesn't mean it's not creepy.

OT: I get very annoyed at sites that have cookie plugins that require you to scroll down and down and down, manually rejecting each of the "legitimate interest" vendors sections.

What they call "legitimate interest" is often not my definition of "legitimate interest."

Please use a plugin with a "reject all" for non-essential cookies.

Maybe you think I'll just get tired of scrolling down and will just accept all. But I don't. If your site irritates me on cookies, I just leave.

Meeting up all your online friends
in-person can be exhilarating! :awesome:

But while you're having fun hanging out at your favorite hacker conference,
don't forget to ask for consent before posting photos of others online.

Asking for consent before sharing data is cool AF.

Be cool AF :neocat_cool_fingerguns: ✨
