Devonport Leat, Dartmoor, Devon

One of two aquaducts on this leat, constructed in the 1790s to carry fresh drinking water from the high ground of Dartmoor to the expanding dockyards at Plymouth Dock (later renamed Devonport). Superceded by Burrator reservoir, although some water from the leat is diverted into it.

There's been a Kingsett Farm in Newleycombe Valley, Dartmoor, since at least 1330. After Plymouth City Corporation built the dam for Burrator reservoir in late C19, tenants of farms in the catchment were hassled to leave, but the Pearce family at Kingsett resisted. The Corporation then bought Kingsett Farm and barred tenants from keeping animals. The Pearce family left in 1924 with no compensation.

Kingsett is one of many ruined farms in the watershed of Burrator Reservoir.
