3 things about David Lean’s THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS [1949]

1. A lunch that lasts so long the afternoon transitions into twilight; they watch the lights coming on outside from the balcony.
2. The curve of the tracks.
3. He sets down her drink on the theatre program, just after she notices its presence.

This is something special. I can't wait to see it again.

Watching Brief Encounter (1945) for the first time. Written and produced by Noel Coward and directed by David Lean, it's a black and white study in suburban infidelity and suppressed longing.

There's a great line from Celia Johnson's character which struck me, perhaps more than any other in the movie:

"It's awfully easy to lie when you know that you're trusted implicitly. So very easy and so very degrading."
