Juggling With Eggs

Feels like Rose Ayling-Ellis is having a real moment right now. I love the fact that she is bringing the #deaf experience to the mainstream.

I just hope this continues…and expands to other deaf actors and other #disabilities.

TV has done a huge amount to de-mystify the experience of minority groups. This is absolutely what good public broadcasting should do. But it needs to do it well - to take its audience on an entertaining journey not lecture it.

Started watching Code of Silence on #ITVX tonight - crime drama staring Rose Ayling-Ellis and Charlotte Ritchie. Involves a lot of lip reading, subtitles and signing…but these are integral to story and bring the audience along on the #deaf / hard of hearing experience.

I’ve never seen anything quite like it in terms of explaining how lip reading is sort of a super power, but it has its limitations - need a good angle, certain letters/words are identical in shape and context is everything!

When I bought a plane ticket and ticked the "Disability assistance - hard of hearing" box and then went on to seat selection, it offered to let my wife choose a seat (for a fee), but said that for me seat selection was "unavailable". When I went back and unticked the box, it offered to let us both choose a seat.

That seems odd. All I can think of is that maybe they didn't want me choosing an exit row, and went overboard? Why are deaf people not allowed to choose their seats?

@hosford42 Maybe you can get some help from the #deaf community and learn together? It's basically like learning a foreign language, so if you want to become fluent, this is a long-term time investment. You might make some interesting new friends though.

Of course, only if that isn't too many people in the same room for your daughter.
