China’s choice to respond to tariff chaos by, on the one hand, increasing the effort to coöperate regionally and, on the other hand, impose export restrictions, particularly for rare resources difficult or imposdible to source elsewhere makes sense.

Seems #degrowth is now a hard reality. Collateral benefits, unintended but well due.

"There are various non-mystical reasons why fossil fuels remain more profitable than renewables...Not all these things are necessarily set in stone for all time in such a way that it’s inconceivable renewables will ever compete with fossil fuels. But you’d expect an in-depth academic treatment of climate & energy futures to engage with them properly, rather than unfurling strange arguments about free energy & sunflowers."

On #tariffs:
"Retaliation by other countries will lead to a fall in US exports. In the 1930s, after the Smoot-Hawley tariffs were imposed, retaliation led to a 33% fall in US exports and spiralling down of international trade […].

American bloke on Channel 4 news says global trade is all unfair as USA consumers consume 30% of everything made in the world. All that tat.

Just a thought but wouldn't it be simpler if they just consumed less?

At its core, #degrowth feels to me like a deliberate return to a stronger, healthier version of ourselves, of our very humanity... a coming home, if you will, and a “welcome back” to the better angels of our nature that we abandoned far too long ago with the rise of patriarchy and growth-oriented civilization.
