Actor Liam Cunningham was among a huge crowd of local and international supporters who gathered in solidarity as they bid the Madleen farewell from Catania, Sicily. He highlights the inaction of governments worldwide in response to overwhelming and unambiguous proof of Israel’s genocide being carried out in Gaza. In the context of government complicity in failing to uphold their obligations under international law, he reminds us that actual change is always driven by the people.
For those of you too young to remember, Anita Bryant was the 1958 Miss Oklahoma beauty pageant winner, and a brand ambassador for the Florida Citrus Commission from 1969 to 1980, a pop singer with 3 hit songs, AND one of the most vocal and prominent anti-LGBTQ activists of the late 1970s. She ran a campaign to repeal a Miami-Dade County, Florida ordinance outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation. LGBTQ activists and prominent figures in music, film, and television retaliated by boycotting orange juice she promoted, causing her to be blacklisted, contributing, ultimately, to her having to file for bankruptcy twice. On October 14, 1977, she repeatedly told a television audience that she "loves homosexuals, but hates their sin," resulting in her getting pied in the face by LGBTQ writer and activist, Thom L. Higgins.
In 1978, she promoted the Briggs Initiative in California, which would have gotten any public school teacher fired for making any pro-lgbtq statements. Interestingly, it was opposed not only by liberals, but by President Jimmy Carter, Governor Jerry Brown, former president Gerald Ford, as well as Ronald Reagan, resulting in its massive defeat at the polls.
Today in Labor History June 2, 1975: 100 sex workers occupied that Saint-Nizier church in Lyon to protest against police repression. They demanded that all their convictions be reversed. The police evicted them after a week. However, soon after, a judge cancelled their upcoming prison sentences.

As someone who was trapped for many years in a DV situation, my heart goes out to anyone who is trying to escape and seek safety for themselves and their children.
I know what that feels like, and I know what that looks like.

Seit Kurzem blockieren Aktivist*innen mit Baumhäusern und Skypods den Ausbau der E6, einer der zentralen Fernstraßen Norwegens – direkt neben einem Naturschutzgebiet. Mit ihren Körpern stellen sie sich der Zerstörung in den Weg. Denn sie sind Natur, die sich wehrt.
Der geplante Ausbau der E6 im Lågendelta ist Teil eines größeren Infrastrukturprojekts, das massive Eingriffe in sensible Ökosysteme bedeutet. 4 Millionen Tonnen Alum-Schiefer sollen gesprengt werden – mit radioaktivem Radon und schwefelsaurer Verseuchung der Gewässer als Folge.
Bereits im Februar 2025 wurde ein Haus in Øyresvika besetzt – genau dort, wo der Tunnel der neuen E6 beginnen soll. Solange dieses Haus gehalten wird, kann der Bau nicht starten. Ein starkes Zeichen des Widerstands – direkt im Weg der Zerstörung.
Vom 23.–25. Mai fand ein kraftvolles Widerstandscamp (Leir) mit Konzerten, Workshops und Diskussionen statt. Menschen aus lokalen und internationalen Kämpfen kamen zusammen, um sich auszutauschen und zu organisieren. Die größte Demo, die Haavemoen je gesehen hat, legte die Bauarbeiten auf beiden Seiten des Flusses stundenlang lahm. Jetzt wächst der Widerstand weiter – in den Bäumen und auf dem Boden!
Der Ausbau der E6 steht exemplarisch für „grüne“ Kolonialpolitik: Neue Straßen erschließen Sápmi weiter, beschleunigen den Abbau von Rohstoffen für die „grüne“ Industrie – und verdrängen indigene Gemeinschaften. Fälle wie in Fosen oder Melkøya zeigen, was auf dem Spiel steht. Unsere Solidarität gilt allen, die sich dieser Zerstörung widersetzen.

Background:
"In the 1970s, Dineh (Navajo) families around Big Mountain were notified that their communities would be uprooted and that they may never see their ancestral homelands ever again. Now 50 years later, less than 20 home sites remain and the once strong #resistance leaders like #PaulineWhitesinger, #HaastinNiizBegay, #JohnKatenay, and #RobertaBlackgoat (#KleeBenally's grandmother) have all passed on.
How should the future remember the legacies of such wise teachers? What gave their community the will to defy U.S.
Congressional Legislations that were nothing but anti-Indian which was forcing them to give up hundreds of years of cultural existence?
The Congress of the United States passed Public Law 93-531 in 1974 and it was signed by the President. It is an Executive Order, a declaration to exterminate, a declaration of war. The justification for this law was to “resolve” a supposed “land-dispute” among the Hopis and Dineh, and the lands were divided.
The 2023 Video Documentary:
The original impetus for resisting the federal mandate was the sacredness of the lands, ancestral ties and natural features which were dwelling places of Deities. The elder interviewees knew the future will not be the same way as they had lived and the same childhood experience. The video put aside much of the effective resistance against the most powerful, #capitalistic country in the world, instead the video presents stories about their ancestors’ teachings. A Dineh ritual existence which was basically daily living, ceremonies and nutrition. An indigenous atmosphere long before the Europeans’ arrival with its brutal conquest. The video narrowly touches on a 400-year history of cultural survival and maintaining identity. And how that history overlaps with so-called modern America.
One grandmother’s story become an intense chapter, and it is about her direct clan ancestry facing near annihilation as one little girl survives which resulted in re-establishing a Clan at Big Mountain.
"This story comes from a massacre site with two mass graves. Then stories about decades of intense state of fear and which lead into the US’s late 1800s war policy of random killing, starvation and captivity. The modern times the 1920s and 30s when these story tellers were born, a different state of fear had re-emerged, and then again at their elderhood in the late 1900s. All the stories in this documentary program are messages for the future because, as these elders have predicted, the lands maybe empty of indigenous culture which once thrived for centuries."
